Frequently asked questions about HBF travel insurance

Q1. Am I eligible for HBF travel insurance?

Probably! You don’t need to be a health fund member to buy HBF travel insurance, although it will save you 10% off the price of your policy, as will buying your policy online.
There isn’t an age limit on HBF travel insurance, but if you are over 70, you will have to complete a medical assessment before purchasing your policy. Also keep in mind that older travellers will pay higher premiums for cover.

Q2. When’s the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy?

It’s up to you, but at Mozo, we’d recommend buying travel insurance as soon as you start paying for plane tickets or accommodation. That way, if something unexpected happens and you need to cancel, you’ll be covered for those costs under your policy.

You can buy your travel insurance policy 12 months in advance of your trip - so there’s plenty of time to get organised!

Q3. Does my HBF travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

There are 25 medical conditions that will be automatically covered under your HBF travel insurance at no extra charge, although some of them do come with special provisions. 11 of these are only covered as long as they have not caused you significant problems (i.e. that you had to seek medical treatment for) in the last 90 days.
You can apply for cover for any other pre-existing medical condition, but remember that you will pay higher premiums if your condition is approved for cover.
Check out our guide on travelling with a pre-existing medical condition for some handy hints and tips on finding the right travel insurance policy.

Q4. Can I extend my policy while I am travelling?

Having too much fun to stop now? Great! But make sure you extend your travel insurance policy so you’re covered the entire time you’re away. To do this, you’ll have to contact HBF before your original policy expires. You can extend up to three times, but the total time of your journey, including your original trip, can’t be more than 24 months (or 6 months for an Economy plan).
One important detail to remember: cover can’t be extended for pre-existing medical conditions, or any medical conditions you suffer during your original policy.

Q5. Are dependants covered under my HBF travel insurance policy?

Yes! Both single or double policies include any dependant children travelling with you at no extra premium. To be eligible, the dependant must be:

Q6. Can I cancel my HBF travel insurance?

Within 21 days of buying your policy, you can cancel it for a full refund of your premium. This cooling off period applies as long as you haven’t made a claim on your policy or started your trip.
You can cancel outside this period, as long as you haven’t made a claim, but you’ll need to provide written proof that your trip has been cancelled or shortened. In this case, you can still get a refund, but an administration fee of $50 and the cost of any travel days you were insured for will be deducted.

Exclusions to look out for in HBF travel insurance policies

What isn’t covered by your HBF travel insurance policy is just as important as what is! Remember to read your PDS carefully and be aware of any exclusions that might affect your cover.
