Frequently asked questions about Ouch Online travel insurance

Who can buy an Ouch Online travel insurance policy?

Anyone under 65 years of age can buy an Ouch Online travel insurance policy, as long as you are also an Australian resident and haven’t already left on your journey.

Online travel insurance policy cover?

The level of cover you have will depend on which policy you buy, but most Ouch Online policies include cover under many of the same benefits. These include:

Will Ouch Online travel insurance cover my pre-existing medical condition?

There are 29 pre-existing medical conditions which are covered automatically and at no extra charge, including allergies, bell's palsy and epilepsy. For other conditions, you can apply to pay an extra premium and be covered.

Keep in mind that many of these conditions are only covered subject to some special criteria - for example, asthma will only be covered if you are under 60 years of age.
For all conditions, if you’ve been in hospital for them in the last 24 months, you won’t be covered, unless you apply and Ouch Online agree to cover the condition.

You can check out our guide, dedicated to travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions if you’d like to know more.

Does Ouch Online travel insurance cover me for pregnancy?

It can be hard to find effective travel insurance for pregnancy. Ouch Online will cover your pregnancy up to the 26th week, as long as you haven't had any complications (in this or any other pregnancy) and you didn’t conceive via assisted reproduction.
Outside this, your pregnancy isn’t covered and neither is childbirth or antenatal care.

What extra additions does Ouch Online travel insurance offer?

Tailoring your travel insurance policy is a great way to get the most out of your cover and pay a premium that’s worth it. Ouch Online offer a few optional extras that you can add to your cover, including a snow sports pack, additional rental cover and extra cover for valuable items of luggage.

What if I need to cancel my Ouch Online travel insurance?

Decided Ouch Online travel insurance is not for you? You have a cooling off period of 21 days, during which you can cancel your policy for a full refund of your premium, provided that you haven’t made a claim yet and you haven’t started your trip.

What you’ll need when claiming with Ouch Online travel insurance

One of the most important things to keep in mind when making a claim with your Ouch Online travel insurance, is that you need to have the right documents to back up your claim. They all need to be official documents from someone in a relevant position of authority, and if you can’t produce them, your claim might be denied.

Here are some general rules about what you might need in different situations:

You’ll need a written record of the cancellation, and ideally, a reason for it in writing as well. This includes cancellation of flights, other transport, tours or accommodation.

If your trip or your luggage is delayed for a significant amount of time (usually about 6 hours) make sure you get a statement that explains why the delay occurred and how long it lasted. If the delay means you had to pay for anything else - whether that's extra food or accommodation, or replacement flights or transport - keep receipts for these costs as well, as you can usually claim them.

If something is lost, stolen or damaged on your travels, make a report to police within 24 hrs and get a written copy. If your baggage is lost or damaged by a transport company make sure you get a statement from them.

For anything valuable that you’re carrying on your travels - laptops, cameras, jewellery - you should have proof of ownership and value. Usually, that means the original receipt, or a credit card bill showing the purchase.

If your airline or tour company offers you compensation in any of the above cases, you won’t be able to claim that amount on your Ouch Online insurance. If you’re only offered partial payment, however, your travel insurance will pay the difference. Just make sure you keep a record of how much you were reimbursed.

Making a claim on your Ouch Online travel insurance policy

In case something does go wrong, here’s how to put in a claim on your Ouch Online travel insurance:

Online
You can submit your claim online through the Ouch Online website. This is usually the quickest way to submit, and you can attach all your supporting documents within the online form.

Via post
If you’re a little more old school, you can download a claims form from the Ouch Online website and then post it, and all your supporting documents to Ouch Online. Remember that you’ll have to send the originals of all your documents, but you should keep a photocopy for yourself.

After spending hours of my life reviewing the fine print, we found that for a four month trip Ouch was pretty seamless when it comes to coverage. Sure, there are some holes with regard to rental cars / motor homes, so you you might want to add rental car insurance when you're in the US too. Just to be safe.
