QBE Travel Insurance

QBE

When you take out a travel insurance policy with many providers in Australia - including Qantas, ANZ and Easy Travel Insurance - you might not know their policies are actually underwritten by Australia’s largest global insurer, QBE Insurance.

This means when it comes to making a claim you won’t be doing so with the provider but with QBE. We know what you’re thinking, “Why don’t I just take out a travel insurance policy directly and bypass the third party providers like Qantas?”

Well, before you decide that a travel insurance policy with QBE is the best option for you, read our quick overview below...

About QBE

Originally dubbed the North Queensland Insurance Company, QBE is no spring chicken with roots in Australia dating back to 1886.

Today, QBE is the largest insurer in Australia and one of the top 20 insurers in the world, offering a great range of insurance products, including car insurance, lenders mortgage insurance and of course travel insurance.

Rates and fees verified as correct at 08 December, 2016. Other information correct at the time of writing.

What travel insurance policies do QBE offer?

When it came to thinking up names for its travel insurance policies, QBE kept things simple, very simple.

There’s the A Travel Plan (for globetrotters to Europe, South and Central America, the Middle East, Japan and Africa), the B Travel Plan (for jetsetters to the UK, Asia and Tahiti) and the C Travel Plan (for adventurers to the Pacific Region and Indonesia).

On top of this, QBE also offers a Premiere Plus Extras Travel Plan (if you’re travelling to the USA, Canada and Antarctica), which as you’d expect comes with the highest level of cover for those regions. Plus if you’re travelling overseas multiple times throughout the year, there’s also the Annual Multi Trip Travel Plan from QBE.

With all overseas travel insurance policies from QBE, you’ll be able to choose either single or duo/family cover.

Benefits of a QBE travel insurance policy:

Unlimited overseas medical and hospital cover:

Whether you go for the basic policies (A, B and C Travel Plans), the cream of the crop Premiere Plus Extras Travel Plan or Annual Trip Multi Travel Plan, you’ll receive the protection of unlimited medical cover and hospital cover.

Unlimited cancellation cover:

Rebooking everything from your flights through to your overseas accommodation and tours could end up costing you an arm and a leg - especially if it happens at the last moment. Thankfully, all of QBE’s travel insurance policies provide cancellation cover, without a cap on how much you can claim.

Children under 21:

Travelling with young children or even your kidults under 21? Well you may be happy to hear that they’ll be covered under QBE’s travel insurance policy, all you’ll need to do is select the duo/family option.

Earn Qantas Frequent Flyer Points:

Do you love nothing more than racking up points on your travel expenses? If you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer member and go for the Premiere Plus Extras Travel Plan you can do just that, as you’ll receive one QFF point for every dollar you spend on that insurance policy.

Optional extra of snow sports:

Are the slopes calling your name? While snow sports are not included in the cover offered by QBE as standard, you can choose this as an “optional extra” when you’re taking out the travel insurance, so that you’ll be financially covered against any mishaps on your snowbound adventure.

What's not covered?

Pre existing medical conditions:

There are a few medical conditions that are not covered by QBE, including cancer, cardiovascular disease and mental health problems. But some other conditions like asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, high cholesterol and pregnancy (up to 26 weeks) are.

Extreme sports:

If you go for a travel insurance policy from QBE, mountaineering and rock climbing should be a no go, as both these extreme sports are not covered. But for other adrenaline seeking activities like bungee jumping, skydiving and surfing you will be.

Making a claim:

If down the track on your travel journey, you find your flight is cancelled or you need to take a trip to an overseas hospital, making a claim can also be done online too. A few things to have handy include:

Very poor customer service - never again

I'm glad I didn't need to claim because I had to hassle several times before leaving just to get the insurance certificate. I had already paid of course so couldn't get out, but I was left unimpressed and hoping I didn't need to make a claim.
