Important things to know about Virgin Money travel insurance

What your policy covers

With so many options to tailor your Virgin Money travel insurance to suit your trip, exactly what your policy covers will depend on what level of cover and additional extras you choose. Here are a few of the benefits you can expect to be covered under most Virgin Money travel insurance policies:

This excludes the Virgin Money Basic travel insurance policy, which includes only medical and liability benefits.

What pre-existing medical conditions are covered

There are 36 pre-existing medical conditions which should be covered automatically under Virgin Money travel insurance policies, as long as you have not been hospitalised for the condition in the last 24 months.
You can apply for other medical conditions to be covered, but this is only possible under the comprehensive and multi-trip policy options and will usually mean an extra premium.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition that isn’t automatically covered but you don’t want to pay an extra premium to have it covered, you may be able to choose a non-medical travel insurance plan. Under this plan, you can not claim hospital or medical expenses, or any other expenses that might arise from a medical condition, such as cancellation or delay.

What medical assistance is offered

With Virgin Money travel insurance you’ll have constant access to emergency assistance through phone lines, including a reverse charge option. Virgin Money can assist with things like:

The age limit

Comprehensive Virgin Money travel insurance is available to people of all ages, although if you are older than 75, you’ll have to apply for cover and Virgin Money do reserve the right to refuse.
Essentials, Basic and Multi-trip plans are only available to people 74 years of age or younger.
If you’re looking for travel insurance geared toward seniors, take a look at Mozo’s guide on seniors travel insurance.

When you can buy your Virgin Money travel insurance policy

The best thing to do is to buy your travel insurance policy as soon as you start buying your plane tickets or booking your trip. That way, you’ll be covered for cancellation if something unexpected happens and you can no longer travel. You can buy Virgin Money travel insurance up to 12 months in advance of your departure date, but you can’t purchase it after you have left Australia.

Cancelling your Virgin Money travel insurance policy

If for any reason you decide you no longer need your Virgin Money travel insurance policy, you have a cooling off period of 14 days. In this time, you can cancel your cover for a full refund of your premium, provided you haven’t started your trip or made any claims on your policy.
You can still cancel after the 14 day period, but unfortunately you won’t be entitled to a refund of any of your premium. Also, if you decide to return home earlier than planned, you won’t be able to get a refund for the extra time on your travel insurance.

What optional travel insurance cover does Virgin Money offer?

Snow Pack

A number of sporting activities are covered under Virgin Money travel insurance policies, but they don’t include snow sports, so if you’re hitting the slopes on your trip, you’ll need to take out Virgin Money’s snow pack. This pack covers you for most winter sports, excluding off-piste or backcountry activities, bobsleighing, heli-skiing or aerial skiing. You also need to be participating in the right season, or at a registered resort with enough snow for regular activities.
Some fine print to be aware of: this pack doesn’t cover personal liability or permanent disability.

To find out more, check out Mozo’s dedicated guide on finding snow travel insurance.

Cruise Pack

If you’re looking at a cruise for your trip, you’ll want Virgin Money’s travel insurance cruise pack on board. This pack includes medical and cabin confinement, and also covers cancellation of pre-paid shore excursions.

Before you take to the high seas, be sure to read Mozo’s guide on finding travel insurance for cruises!

Adventure Pack

When you’re planning the adventure of a lifetime, make sure you’re covered by a Virgin Money travel insurance adventure pack. There are a list of sports and activities automatically included in your policy, but if you want to try out more extreme activities, like abseiling, tandem skydiving or caving, the Adventure pack covers you for these as well. Expeditions to the Kokoda Track are also covered under this pack.

Increased item limits

Say you’ve got something in your luggage that is worth a bit more than the limit of cover on your Virgin Money travel insurance policy. You can add extra cover to these high value items like cameras, computers, jewellery, and antiques for a little extra peace of mind. There are two levels of increased cover to choose from, and they’ll protect you against theft, damage or loss of the item you choose.

Additional Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Cover

Virgin Money travel insurance policies do not automatically cover rental vehicles so if you’re heading off on a road trip you should think about adding additional rental vehicle cover. But keep in mind that you’re covered only as long as you obey your rental agreement, and only while you are driving the car.

Virgin Money travel insurance policies: the fine print

Remember that what’s not covered by your Virgin Money travel insurance is just as important as what is. To make the most of your policy and ensure your claim goes as smoothly as possible, you should always keep one eye on the fine print and know what might be excluded from cover. To make it a bit easier, we’ve collected some general exclusions and tricky conditions that apply to most Virgin Money travel insurance policies:

My wife and I took Virgin Travel (Medical) Insurance to cover an extended trip to the USA. My wife fell very ill from a stomach infection. Because the infection and bacteria causing it was difficult to locate she required several visits to Emergency Medical Clinics and finally a speciality doctor. While the local people at Allianz Global Assistance in the USA were very helpful in locating medical clinics and doctors, when it came time to submit our claim for reimbursement back in Australia, it was an entirely different matter. They are impossible to contact by phone. Required that we submit everything by email, and then kept delaying action even further by asking us to submit supporting documents that we had already supplied to them TWICE. Our total Medical claim amounted to over AUS$4000. After 3 months we eventually saw a deposit to our bank account for AUS$901 ! ! ! WITHOUT any letter, email or call explaining the difference. These people are just the pits...... and Richard Branson should be ashamed to have the Virgin name associated with this outfit.
