It is no secret that the cost of living in certain parts of Australia is extremely high and plenty of households are struggling to cope.

People's savings accounts have taken a battering in recent months, as the price of essentials such as energy bills and petrol has risen sharply.

With this in mind, it is vital that Aussie workers are getting a fair wage and there have been calls for the lowest paid members of society to be given a pay rise.

Thankfully, the government has agreed that the 1.4 million lowest earners should be given an increase that will help them deal with the high cost of living in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne – which are among the world's most expensive conurbations.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions has proposed a rise of at least $26 a week, although the government has not placed a specific figure on any potential increase.

However, the high Australian dollar is putting lots of pressure on retailers and the manufacturing sector across the country and they will be less than enthusiastic about awarding their workers more money.
