Bargain hunters took their credit cards and showed up en masse when a new discount store was opened in Melbourne.

Costco was inaugurated at the Docklands this week and saw hundreds of shoppers eager to spend.

Among the most popular items purchased by savings account customers and others were flat-screen televisions, designer handbags and fresh flowers.

The opening may prompt people to dip into their high interest savings to make a purchase.

Many shoppers enjoyed the free tastings that were available on the opening day, including banana cake, cranberry juice and blueberries.

Part of a global network of 558 stores, the chain is a US retailer that offers deals such as one kilogram of Yumis hummus dip for $6.39 and Hugo Boss Texas jeans for $99.99.

While shoppers were keen to spend in the shops, they are also confident when it comes to travel, according to Roy Morgan research cited in an AAP report.
