Now could be the best time for Aussies to boost their savings accounts by asking their boss for a pay rise, it has been claimed.

Chief executive at the Australian Human Resources Institute Peter Wilson told News Limited that most senior workers come back from the festive holiday in a more positive frame of mind and stress levels are generally lower.

With this in mind, he stated, there is a window of opportunity for workers to negotiate better terms of pay.

Mr Wilson also added that if a member of staff leaves, it can often take months to replace them, so it is worth pushing for a promotion, as many mangers prefer to look internally when replacing employees.

"Twenty per cent of external hires fail. Unless you are promoting someone from within, there's a risk with getting someone from outside," he was quoted as saying.

Recent figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that unemployment was up across Australia in December 2011, with 5.2 per cent of the population out of work.
