Aussies struggling to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living can take some simple measures to boost their savings accounts.

Category manager of Electrolux Home Products Grant Stevens told News Limited that one of the best ways to cut down on household expenses is to reassess the way you do your laundry.

He advised that reusing water and limiting the amount of detergent being put into a washing machine will help you make significant savings over time.

While this may seem trivial, the fact that the latest World Cost of Living Survey showed that Sydney and Melbourne are among the most expensive places to live in the world suggests that any little tips to help Aussies reduce their outgoings are welcome.

"The real cost of operating a machine in the laundry is not so much the time of wash but the heat of the water you're using," Mr Stevens was quoted as saying, before adding that spin drying machines should also be used sparingly as they are very expensive to run.
