Aussies heading off to university may want to take some time to think about their student bank account before going away to study.

Among the things to look out for are the overdraft facilities and the interest rates charged.

Those who decide to compare student banking products online may also want to check on whether there are any monthly fees to be paid to the bank.

When on a tight budget, any little extras could be helpful, so it may also be worthwhile checking whether the bank has any special deals or offers for those who are going to university.

Once a student bank account has been selected, Aussies going to uni may also want to think about drawing up a budget to ensure they make the most of their funds and do not squander their cash.

This comes after international education consultant Alan Olsen observed that between 2000 and 2009, the proportion of women between the ages of 25 and 34 who achieved tertiary qualifications rose to 39.1 per cent, the Australian reported.
