Alaska might not be the first place you think of when looking for a perfect holiday destination, but tourism chiefs in the state insist that Aussies have been flocking to the North American region in big numbers.

Australia has quickly become Alaska's top inbound travel market, overtaking the UK in the process, Travel Weekly reports.

There is no denying the state is one of the most naturally beautiful places on the planet and Alaska Tourism said it is particularly popular among cruise passengers.

Indeed, 90 per cent of Aussies visit Alaska as part of a luxury boat tour, while one in three people leave the liner in order to stay on land.

The tourism board's marketing manager Kathy Dunn said extra funds will be made available to advertise the destination down under in an attempt to attract even more Aussies to Alaska.

Visitors have been benefiting from the best exchange rates seen for years thanks to the strength of the Aussie dollar. At the moment, one dollar will get you US$1.04 in return.
