Aussies 'are splashing the cash when overseas'

Australian tourists are spending huge sums of money when they head abroad, new figures have confirmed.

According to the latest Visa Travel Snapshot, Aussies spent $6.8 million on their travel credit cards last year, which was six per cent higher than in 2010, the News Limited Network reports.

However, the amount of overseas travel money being spent by visitors to Australia tumbled by eight per cent over the same period. Tourists from the UK were particularly reluctant to part with their cash, as spending levels declined by 15 per cent.

This is hardly surprising given the strength of the Aussie dollar in recent years.

The currency has gained on the likes of the US dollar, British pound and euro, so Aussies who venture to foreign countries are getting far more bang for their buck.

Aussie travellers had seen the dollar dip earlier in 2012, but it has rebounded well in recent weeks and has made overseas holidays even more attractive.
