Aussies who are planning to party while on holiday have been warned to stay in control of their cash and travel credit cards at all times.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, a growing number of people are being targeted by criminals when they are seen out drinking alcohol during a vacation.

Government officials have urged Aussies to do some planning before they head to events such as Full Moon Parties in Thailand. It is worth finding out how much money you are likely to spend before you leave the hotel and then just take as much as you need, leaving the rest in a secure place.

"Avoid carrying your passport, large amounts of cash, multiple credit cards or other valuables to parties and clubs," a spokesperson for smartraveller.com.au commented.

The authorities also stated that you should never share your travel or accommodation details with strangers.

Australian Bankers' Association chief executive Steven Munchenberg told National Features that Aussies should also do their homework before buying their travel money, as rates can differ greatly between providers.
