India wins best destination gong at World Travel Awards
India won the best destination gong at the recent World Travel Awards (WTA) held in London earlier this week, news that may lead some Aussies to consider buying prepaid travel cards and booking tickets to the country.
Speaking at the award presentation ceremony, chairman of the WTA Graham Cooke described the country as "one of the most favoured destinations for tourists from around the world".
Tourism currently accounts for 6.23 per cent of India's overall national gross domestic product and the sector is still growing.
Mr Cooke suggested that the expansion of the industry could see it overtake other top destinations to become one of the world's premier holiday destinations.
"With investment over the next two years it hopes to drive to 'year-round' tourism, including eco, wildlife, health and cruising," he asserted.
Those who apply for travel credit cards before taking a trip to India may want to visit some of the country's many famous landmarks, such as the Taj Mahal in Agra, which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
