London has been crowned as the world's best tourist hotspot for the second year running.

The latest MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index has been published and it shows the English capital to be the most sought after place on the planet.

Visitor numbers are expected to rise by 1.1 per cent this year and tourism spending is predicted to grow by 10.3 per cent.

Plenty of Aussies will be making purchases on their prepaid travel cards in London when the Olympic Games get going at the end of July.

Getting to the UK is not cheap and the dollar has weakened against the pound in recent months, which means many Aussies are likely to miss out on the best exchange rates.

However, the MasterCard report also revealed that a number of other cities are emerging as travel hubs. Colombo in Sri Lanka, Istanbul in Turkey and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil are all likely to prove popular among holidaymakers this year too.
