Thousands of Aussies will require overseas travel money later in the year, as many are planning to head to Mexico to witness "the end of the world".

The strange event will mark the end of the ancient Mayan calendar and is being classed as the Apocalypse.

Around 50 million people will head to the city of Tapachula – situated on the border of Guatemala – on December 21st.

According to Meg Hall from Sydney-based Latin-American travel specialist Chimu Adventures, the demand for flights to Mexico later in the year has grown sharply among Aussies.

"Usually people don't book until closer to departure, but obviously it's going to be very busy," she commented.

"It certainly looks like a lot of Australians are going to be heading out there," Ms Hall added.

Bosses at Flight Centre recently told the Australian that many people are also booking early trips to places such as London and Edinburgh in order to celebrate New Year's Eve in 2012.
