Travel agents still alive and kicking down under

With more and more people using the internet to find holidays, travel credit cards and overseas travel money, it is little wonder that many are predicting the imminent demise of the high street tour operator.

It is just far more convenient to book a vacation from the comfort of your own home and it is also easier to compare packages in order to find the cheapest deal.

However, according to global market research firm TNS, there is still plenty of life in travel agents yet.

Speaking to e-Travel Blackboard, company spokesperson Jo Farquhar said Aussies are still keen to let a professional holiday company take care of their trip, rather than book separate hotels, flights and activities themselves.

She suggested this is particularly the case when people are planning an international tour, although shrewd travellers are still researching possible destinations before they visit an agent.

"For years the industry around the globe has been talking about the demise of travel agents but it hasn't happened and they are still valued as people," Ms Farquhar was quoted as saying.
