Aussies who want their overseas travel money to stretch further should book holidays during off-peak times.

Bosses at online travel agent zuji.com.au have suggested that to avoid paying high prices, it is better to head abroad when destinations are traditionally quiet.

As well as this, the website added, travelling to less renowned parts of the world can pay dividends, as you are less likely to encounter tourist taxes than you are in more high-profile regions.

Managing director at the firm James Gaskell told e-Travel Blackboard that a little bit of research can make all the difference when looking for a memorable, but affordable break.

"Everybody likes a bargain, but there is only so far most customers are willing to compromise on quality, especially when it comes to long haul flights and hotel accommodation," he commented.

Mr Gaskell also urged Aussies to be wary of tour operators that issue credit card charges on bookings.

According to Cheapflights.com.au, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is one of the best destinations in terms of offering value for money.
