ANZ Travel Card Review

Rates and fees information correct as at 26 May 2017.

Review published: 17 November 2011

What's hot:

  • Commission free spending while you're overseas

  • Great for travelling in Asia

  • $11 purchase fee waived for a limited time

  • Mozo Experts Choice Travel Money winner 2017

What's not:

  • High ATM withdrawal fees

  • $3 monthly inactivity fee

Mozo snapshot:

The ANZ Travel Card is a prepaid card that allows you to select the currencies you want to spend overseas and lock in the exchange rate before you go. It has a good selection of Asian currencies including the Thai Baht, Japanese Yen along with Singapore and Hong Kong Dollars and was also judged as a best value prepaid travel card in the Mozo Experts Choice Travel Money awards.

Key features:

The ANZ travel card has no purchase fee, comes with a backup card and you can load it with up to 10 major currencies. Anyone can purchase the ANZ travel card and it can be used for purchases and to withdraw foreign currency wherever prepaid Visa cards are accepted. Purchases are free but ATM withdrawals are charged depending on the country you are in.

For example, it will cost 2.50 USD, 2.00 GBP and 2.20 EUR for each ATM withdrawal in those currencies. But on the upside, because you've locked in your exchange rate you wont be paying any foreign exchange commissions.

Keep in mind, if you're spending in a currency not pre-loaded to your card, you may wind up paying extra fees or penalties.

Who it's good for:

The ANZ Travel Card is great for the globetrotter who will be visiting several countries and will need multiple currencies. It's also an ideal travel money solution for Australians who are looking at hitting Thailand's beach resorts as it's one of the only prepaid travel cards that allow you to lock in the Thai Baht before you go.

Any catches?

If you come home with foreign currency still on the travel card you have two options. Keep it there until your next overseas trip or convert the money back to AUD but be prepared to pay fees and a foreign exchange conversion a second time.
