Australia’s best solar energy plans 2020
Over two million Australian homes are now fitted out with rooftop solar, allowing households to reap the benefits of lower energy bills. But not all energy plans are alike, so how can solar households ensure that they’re getting the cheapest electricity possible?
That’s where the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards for Energy come in.
As part of the awards, our expert judges assessed a host of plans available for households with solar panels in order to name award winners in the Solar-friendly Electricity category.
“In order to identify the cheapest energy plans for customers with existing solar panels, we make an assumption about various household usage levels - so for a small, medium and large household,” said Mozo expert judge, Peter Marshall.
“We also look at what a typical solar system should be able to generate and we make an allowance for households using some of that, but feeding part of it back into the grid. That means we not only take into account reduced energy usage from the grid, but also the payment households can get from retailers for the energy they feed into the grid.”

Click Energy

- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - SA
Taking out three Mozo Experts Choice Awards, Click Energy was the most celebrated winner in the Solar-friendly Electricity category in 2020. In addition to taking out both awards on offer in New South Wales for their Click Flora and Click Flora Plus plans, Click also took home one of the two awards up for grabs in South Australia for their Click Flora Plus plan.
An online energy retailer, Click Energy not only promises simple plans with no lock-in contracts, it also claims to have some of the country’s highest retailer funded feed-in tariffs for its solar customers.
CovaU
- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - QLD
Looking for a great value solar-friendly electricity plan in the sunshine state? CovaU’s Freedom Plus Solar plan was named one of just two 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award winners for Solar-friendly Electricity in Queensland.
One of the newer energy retailers on the market having been launched in 2014, CovaU offers a range of other perks on top of its cheap electricity prices including refer-a-friend discounts and its own rewards scheme.
Energy Australia
- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - QLD
Being one of the largest energy retailers in the country hasn’t stopped Energy Australia offering some of the cheapest electricity for solar households in Queensland. In fact, their No Frills plan took out a 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Solar-friendly Electricity in the state.
Energy Australia are no strangers to picking up accolades for their solar-friendly electricity plans either, having taken out two Mozo Experts Choice Awards last year in the same category in both New South Wales and Queensland.
Elysian Energy
- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - VIC
A back-to-back Victorian Residential Electricity Retailer of the Year winner in 2019 and 2020, it’s hardly a surprise that Elysian Energy offers one of the best value plans for solar households in Victoria as well.
But that’s exactly what Elysian Energy’s Simple Plan was recognised for in the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards, taking out a Best Solar-friendly Electricity Award.
Momentum Energy

Momentum Energy is all about ‘greener’ energy, and as part of Hydro Tasmania they’re delivering that as one of Australia’s largest generators of renewable energy. So it won’t come as a shock to learn that Momentum are also providing some of the cheapest solar-friendly electricity for Victorian households.
That’s why in the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards, Momentum Energy’s Self Serve Electricity plan was named just one of two award winners for best Solar-friendly Electricity in Victoria.
Origin Energy
- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - ACT
- Best Solar-friendly Electricity - SA
Origin Energy has impressed our expert judges once again for its great value solar-friendly energy offers, taking out two 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards for its Origin Solar Boost Plus plan for customers in both the ACT and South Australia.
This isn’t the major energy retailer’s first time on the podium either. In 2019 it took out the same award for Best Solar-friendly Electricity in the ACT.
