Will my car insurance be affected if I get personalised number plates?

So you’re personalising your ride with eye-catching number plates and have the perfect customised set picked out. The only problem? You’re not sure how this foray into individuality will affect your car insurance.

Personalised number plates and your car value

Personalised number plates don’t usually affect the value of your car, according to most sources out there. This is important to know because if the value of your car increases, your insurance provider may put your premium price up.

Of course you’d be forgiven for thinking that customised plates might alter the value of your wheels, as a number of other car modifications do. Some which might are:

  • A new stereo system
  • Alloy wheels
  • A custom paint job
  • A suspension upgrade
  • Adding bull bars
  • Window tinting

According to UK company Primo Reg Plates, some insurance providers may argue that personalised plates make your car more desirable for thieves. Others say that having personalised number plates means your car could be more easily identified after being stolen. So as you can see, it really depends on your insurance provider.

One thing for sure is that not telling your car insurance provider that you’ve changed your number plates could void your cover.

Let your insurance provider know

When you take out car insurance you’ll be given a car insurance certificate. This certificate will list details about your vehicle, including your number plate. If any of the information on the certificate is incorrect and you have an accident or collision, your insurance provider may reject your claim.

So to make sure everything goes as swimmingly as possible, be sure to update any plate changes on your insurance certificate ASAP. Some providers may allow you to do this simply by logging into your account online and updating the details there, others may require you to give them a call.
