What is a mobile phone plan?
With mobile phone plans, you pay on a monthly basis for the phone, your call and text usage, and your data usage (including any excess calls, texts, and data you use over your limit).
Mobile phone plans are different from SIM-only and data-only plans, in that you’re also paying off your handset (the phone tied to your plan).
What should you look for in a mobile phone plan?
When looking for a new mobile phone plan, you’ll want to consider a few key factors.
The cost: The price of a plan is probably people’s biggest concern. Making sure you’re able to pay off both your usage and handset cost each month, means that you won’t be stung with late payment fees.
Data allowance: Make sure you’re getting the right amount of data for your needs. There’s nothing worse than running out of data before the month is over and having to pay a fee to top up your balance.
International calls: Does your plan include international calls? If you’re making calls to overseas numbers regularly, it’s worth checking that your new mobile phone plan includes international calls to the countries you require. In some cases, you may be charged a higher rate to make calls to overseas phone numbers, so check that the cost is worthwhile for you.
Bonus features and deals: Some phone plans include streaming service subscriptions, while others have enticing sign-up deals. Compare mobile phone plans to see if there are any bonus features and deals you might like.
How do mobile data plans work?
Mobile data plans, or data-only plans, offer access to internet data without an associated phone number. So, while you won’t be able to make or receive calls using traditional means, data-only plans are generally suitable for tablets and other internet-only devices. You’ll still pay a monthly fee to access your data allowance.
Can I keep my number if I get a new phone plan?
When you get a new phone plan, you’ll usually have the option to keep your original phone number. You can ask your new telco to port your number, which is a simple process mostly handled by your new service provider.
What happens if I run out of mobile data?
When you run out of mobile data, you can still make phone calls and send texts, but accessing the internet without a Wi-Fi connection on your device may change a little. How it changes depends on your mobile phone plan. In many cases, you will be moved on to low-speed data or charged an extra fee to top up with full-speed data again. It’s worth checking how your mobile service provider handles running out of data so that you’re not caught unaware if it ever happens.
