Online brokerage platform Stake has announced its intention to offer investors the chance to trade Australian shares and ETFs from later this year.

Stake said that it will launch an Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) offering in quarter four of 2021, though specific details about the offering, including brokerage costs, have yet to be released.

The decision by Stake to launch an ASX offering will no doubt be motivated by the surge of Australians who have turned to share trading in the past year. According to the latest Online Investing Report from Investment Trends, 435,000 Aussies started trading for the first time in the 12 months to March 2021 - one in six of whom were under 25.

“The last year has shone a spotlight on the new generation of investor,” said Stake’s chief executive and founder, Matt Leibowitz. “They’re savvy and demand transparency and control to build their wealth in new ways. They don’t want to compromise, feel like they’re coming off second best or are just a cog in the machine. What we’ve built meets that demand.”

“The new generation are after opportunities everywhere. They want flexibility, choice and control. Our mission is to continue to unlock this for them and launching ASX is a huge step on this journey, especially for our customers in Australia.”

Since launching in 2017, the Sydney-based platform has made a name for itself by providing low cost access to US markets for investors in Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and the UK.

In fact, Stake charges $0 brokerage on US stock and ETF trades, a model similar to that of the commission-free, US-based investing app, Robinhood.

The big - and currently unanswered - question ahead of Stake’s move into Australian equities will be how low they plan to go on brokerage though.

A number of low cost brokerage options have become available for Australian investors of late, with 11 platforms being tracked in the Mozo database offering brokerage of $10 or less on Australian shares or ETFs.

Included in that list are 2021 Mozo Experts Choice Online Share Trading Award winners CommSec, CMC Markets, Saxo Markets, SelfWealth, Superhero and ThinkMarkets.
