Australia’s Best Energy Plans in 2023

In 2023, we’ve seen the energy crisis continue. Late last year, chief executive of Alinta Energy, Jeff Dimery, warned that tariffs (the charges you pay for energy use) will increase by a minimum of 35% this year. To help combat these rising energy prices and make our energy sourcing more sustainable, the government is trying to hurry up renewable energy infrastructure.

In the meantime, the best way for Aussies to protect themselves and keep their energy bills down is to do research and compare competitive energy plans to make sure they’re not paying more than need be.

Each year, our Mozo Expert judges set out to find the best residential and small business energy plans deserving of a Mozo Experts Choice Energy Award. After conducting an in-depth analysis of 2,438 products from 37 energy retailers, our Mozo Experts have found this year’s winners.

“From gas plans to electricity plans that offer green initiatives or are suited for people with solar panels – our awards seek to highlight the energy products and retailers offering the best value plans in each state,” Marshall said.

Here’s a look at some of this year’s winners:

To determine the winners for the Best Residential Energy award categories, our Mozo Experts ran a comparison of energy plans sold directly by retailers in the Australian market at a range of different usage levels and in every distributor area to find some of the cheapest plans around.

Electricity plans:

To get the biggest savings on your bills, be sure to check the fees and charges on your electricity plan. With so many competitive options around, there’s little room for excuses when it comes to landing a better deal.

The providers that were found to offer the best residential electricity plans in the Mozo Experts Choice Awards were Nectr, Powershop, 1st Energy, AGL, Origin Energy, Sumo Power and ActewAGL.

Gas plans:

While gas is a popular energy option among Aussie households, not many Aussies are in the know on where to find the best gas plans. A 2023 Mozo Experts Choice Award winner is a great place to start.

The providers that won an award for best Gas Plan in 2023 were GloBird Energy, AGL and Red Energy.

After hunting down and analysing energy plans sold directly by each retailer in the market in every distributor area, our Mozo Expert Judges have found some of the cheapest energy plan options available to an average small business.

Electricity plans:

Every business has different needs; however, a 2023 Mozo Experts Choice Energy Award-winner could be worth a look at. This year, the providers who won in the Small Business Energy Plan category were Energy Locals, Alinta Energy, Sumo Power and 1st Energy.

Gas plans:

As for gas plans, Alinta Energy, Lumo Energy and Red Energy were all Mozo Experts Choice Award-winners in the Small Business Gas Plan category.

On the hunt for an electricity plan that’s not only budget-friendly but environmentally friendly, too? Then you’ll definitely want to check out this year’s Mozo Experts Choice Award-winning green and solar-friendly electricity plans.

To win an award in the Green Electricity categories, providers had to be identified as offering the best value plans for those wanting to support renewable energy generation. This meant that eligible providers had to offer 100% GreenPower and were not involved in, or owned by a company involved in, the extraction of or power generation from coal, gas or oil.

Our Solar-friendly electricity award categories recognise products that provide the cheapest energy for customers with existing solar panels after making an allowance for feed-in tariffs for selling excess energy to the grid as well as the cost of buying electricity from the grid.

Outstanding Customer Satisfaction:

The winners of this category were chosen because they go above and beyond customer expectations. The winners are Dodo, Lumo Energy and Red Energy.

Excellent Customer Service:

This award recognises energy providers who offer amazing customer service, whether it’s over the phone, by email, online or face-to-face. The winner was Red Energy.

Clearest Billing:

Energy bills can be hard to understand, especially when they use lots of unfamiliar terminology. This award recognises energy providers who have clear and accurate bills. The winners are Lumo Energy and Red Energy.

Highly Trusted:

This award recognises energy providers with good reputations due to a range of things, including customer fairness and following through on their promises. The winners are Dodo and Red Energy.

Most Recommended:

For this award, customers were asked which energy providers they would recommend to their family or friends. The winners are Dodo and Red Energy.
