By Tom Watson ·

Whether you’re a seasoned trader or you’re wanting to enter the world of investing for the first time, finding the best online platform or app to trade on is an absolute must.

Luckily our experts have done the hard work for you. They’ve analysed 61 share trading platforms from 23 different providers to shine a spotlight on some of the best online platforms in Australia for a whole range of different investors.

The result? The 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards for Online Share Trading.

So, if you’re ready to take a look at the best share trading platforms available in Australia for casual, regular and active traders, as well as the best micro investment platform and share trading apps, read on below.

Best Casual Trader Awards

Tend to make smaller or infrequent trades? If that sounds like you, you’ll likely appreciate an online share trading platform which keeps broker fees to an absolute minimum. After all, the lower the brokerage, the more you have left to invest. So without further ado, here are the Best Casual Trader Mozo Experts Choice Award winners for 2020:

CMC Markets - Classic

Taking out a Mozo Experts Choice Award in the Casual Trader category for a second straight year, the Classic tier from CMC Markets charges investors just $11 or 0.10% per trade (whichever is greater) for up to ten trades per month. Trades can be made through the online platform, the CMC Markets app or over the phone (for an additional fee), plus there are a range of educational tools and news resources available to help you learn even more about the markets.

Self Wealth - Classic

The Classic option from Self Wealth has also taken out a Best Casual Trader Mozo Experts Choice Award for the second year in a row, and given that it doesn’t come with an account fee and offers one of the lowest brokerage rates around (at $9.50 per trade), we can see why. Self Wealth even provides a range of useful features to help you monitor the performance of your investments through their online platform or the app, plus you’ll be able to compare your own portfolio against others and make use of Self Wealth’s SafetyRating indicator.

Best Regular Trader Award

For any regular investor, cost is still going to be an important factor when it comes to choosing a trading platform, but so is access to features such as live price data and market depth data. That’s why our Regular Trader Award recognises the best of both worlds. This year, a single standout winner was recognised in this award category.

CMC Markets - Active Investor

A back-to-back Mozo Experts Choice Award winner for Best Active Trader, CMC Markets has once again delivered the goods for regular investors with its Active Investor tier. Users will be able to invest in a range of Australian and international shares, as well as managed funds (mFunds) and ETFs amongst other products, with brokerage for up to 30 trades per month set at either $9.90 or 0.08% (whichever is greater). Traders also have access to live market data, analytics and a suite of other handy features.

Best Active Trader Award

When it comes to trading at an active level, the Mozo Experts Choice Award for Best Active Trader aims to recognise the platforms which best cater for larger trade volumes and data requirements. While brokerage costs may still be a factor, active traders are also likely to want a feature-rich service which offers: live price data, a WebIRESS platform, access to a number of international share markets and the ability to trade options, warrants, mFunds and ETFs.

CMC Markets - Pro Platform

Once again, CMC Markets has impressed our expert judges, this time for its Pro Platform. Built with active Australian investors in mind, the Pro Platform was the sole winner of a 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Best Active Trader. The Platform is available for free to investors in the Active and Premium tiers and essentially gives traders the ability to set up and customise their own charts  to track of specific stocks or market trends.

Exceptional Share Trading App Award

Our expert judges recognise that more and more Australian investors are using mobile apps to conduct their trades and manage their portfolios, which is why they also analysed a number of apps suitable for casual or regular traders. This year, two apps were named winners in the Exceptional Share Trading App category.

CommSec App

A household name among Australian investors, the CommSec App has been named an Exceptional Share Trading App Award winner for a second year in a row. The app can be used by investors of all sizes, but what really stands out aside from its user-friendly interface is the range of features packed into the app. These include instant alerts, access to market announcements and news, the ability to create watchlists and, of course, easy viewing of your own portfolio.
