Optus partners with Starlink to offer mobile coverage to 100% of Australia

Optus collabs with Space X - Starlink

The future is here, folks! Optus is partnering up with Elon Musk’s satellite internet service provider, Starlink, to offer coverage to nearly 100% of Australia.

The way it will work is when the Optus network isn’t available (when you’ve got no phone reception), Optus mobile customers will be able to connect to Starlink’s satellites to get basic service coverage.

According to the telco, Optus currently provides coverage to 98.5% of Aussies. However, due to Australia’s size, mobile networks only cover roughly one-third of our total land mass.

This means that many parts of the country have never had mobile coverage. But with the help of Starlink’s satellites, you’ll be able to get mobile phone coverage from anywhere in Australia that has a clear line of sight to the sky.

(Coverage won’t be available in the Australian Radio Quiet Zone in Western Australia, where services are not permitted, or in Remote Offshore Territories and Islands of Australia).

This Australian-first collaboration will be available for SMS from late 2024, followed by voice and data from late 2025.
