January 2025 Financial Checklist

2025 happy new year

Happy New Year, folks! 2025 has officially begun! It’s time to kickstart your New Year’s resolutions - with the help of your favourite financial read, of course. Your very first financial checklist of 2025 has officially arrived:

1. Reflect & reset for the year ahead

The new year brings a fresh start – and a chance to achieve new goals. But before diving into that, first, take a moment to reflect on the year that was. How did your finances look in 2024? Were you on track with your savings goals, or did your spending habits get a little out of hand?

Remember, this isn’t about guilt – it’s about growth! Use this reflection to pinpoint any areas for improvement so you can set yourself up for a stronger financial future in 2025. Identifying what worked (and what didn’t) is the first step to making a positive change.

2. Ditch your holiday debt

Went a little overboard on the spending this silly season? Don’t stress – now’s the time to take action! If Christmas shopping or other end-of-year celebrations left you with lingering debt, you might want to consider options like a balance transfer credit card or debt consolidation loan. These tools can be used to help simplify your repayments and hopefully create a clearer path towards a debt-free 2025.

3. Set some smart savings goals

Once you’ve identified any areas for improvement, next you’ll want to set some financial goals for the year ahead. Whether it’s paying off holiday debt, saving for a big purchase like a house or car, or growing your emergency fund – having specific savings targets can help keep you focused.

It also helps to break your goals into small, achievable steps and set milestones to help keep you motivated. Having clear goals can also make it easier to measure your progress and keep your finances on track.

4. Build a bulletproof budget

Now that you’ve set some goals, it’s time to create a monthly (or weekly/fortnightly, depending on your regular pay cycle) budget to back them up. Review your current income and expenses and look for areas to save or cut back on.

Allocate money for essentials like debt repayments, bills and savings. Don’t forget to set some money aside for the fun stuff like subscriptions, outings and other activities.

The point isn’t to cut all the fun out of your life – it’s the opposite! By creating a budget, you can ensure that all the important stuff is taken care of first so you can enjoy the good stuff without guilt. Learn more about how to create a budget here.
