Qantas premium rewards credit card: coming to a wallet near you

As Aussies grow more and more disillusioned with low value rewards points schemes, Qantas has announced that it will launch its own reward-focused platinum credit card by the end of the financial year.

The card is set to be issued by Citi and powered by Mastercard, and will offer cardholders a high points earn rate along with exclusive travel benefits.

The new card offering is in response to strong demand for rewards points as a part of everyday spending, according to Qantas Loyalty CEO, Lesley Grant.

“Around 35% of credit card spend in Australia earn Qantas Points, which shows strong interest in this type of reward but also plenty of room for growth,” she said.

If the card is able to offer customers solid rewards value, it may turn out to be a favourite with the three out of four Aussies who have a rewards card. Earlier in the year, Mozo found that 65% of these cardholders were ready to axe their card if rewards value dropped any further, so a competitive new offer may be a welcome addition to the market.

Although the full features of the new Qantas card will only be released when it is launched, it’s unsurprisingly designed for travellers.

“This is a premium card aimed at people who love earning Qantas Points and who travel enough to want access to special deals on airfares and lounge access,” said Grant.

“Ultimately, it’s about giving customers more choice by widening the range of cards that you can earn points on and adding some unique features that only Qantas can offer.”
