Money saving tip:

The best tip I can give is to make your dollar go further by shopping around. That goes for big items like furniture or a car for sure, but it also adds up when you shop for small things like milk, biscuits or apples. If you track this, you’ll notice quite a bit saved up over a week!

How did you get into insurance and financial services? What experience do you have?

My first job out of university was with TAL where I learned the ropes handling insurance broker accounts each day. It was a great introduction to financial services where I learned the language and detail of personal finance products. From there I spent time in communications and content management roles with major financial firms, including Suncorp, CommBank and Allianz. I have also written branded content and marketing materials for Amex, Rabobank and Bendigo Bank.

My favourite topic is property and home loans, an area I have covered extensively as a journalist for major Australian publications such as Domain, Realestate.com.au, Your Mortgage, ANZ’s Bluenotes, The Real Estate Conversation and CommBank’s MyWealth website. I’ve written about everything from weekend auctions to real estate investment trusts, and have spoken to some of the industry’s biggest experts from 'Aussie' John Symond to 'Renovation Queen' Cherie Barber.

How do you keep up to date with the industry?

I read about money and finance every morning before diving into my work. I like to be across the top stories of the day and so always open up The Australian Financial Review and Sydney Morning Herald first, followed by The Guardian and and usually the New York Times for an international perspective.

I also regularly visit the websites of leading finance organisations for the latest trends, including CBA’s newsroom, Westpac’s insights page, Wire, and Deloitte’s many Global Reports. There’s a lot of expert information out there to draw on and build up your own experience, which is what I look to do each week.

Do you have any special awards, qualifications or memberships?

I am RG146 qualified in financial services. I also have a masters degree in Communications which focused on online media.
