American Express is one of the biggest names in the credit card market, offering an extensive choice of cards for personal, business and corporate use. Its range includes Frequent Flyer cards, low rate and no annual fee options, but it’s perhaps best known for its rewards credit cards. Along with their points-earning potential, American Express credit cards can be sought after for their airport lounge access and annual travel credits.
50,000 bonus Qantas Points for new card holders
Earn 1.25 Qantas Points on eligible purchases
Airport lounge access at select locations
$450 Qantas travel credit every year
$450 annual fee
Amex surcharges can be high
Must redeem travel credit through American Express Travel
The American Express Qantas Ultimate Card has plenty of appeal for frequent flyers. To start with, you’ll receive 50,000 bonus Qantas Points when you first sign up, but you must apply by 14 January 2025 and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months to get them.
You’ll also earn 1.25 Qantas Points for every dollar spent on eligible everyday purchases, while spending at government bodies in Australia will get you 0.5 Qantas Points for every dollar.
One downside of this card is the $450 annual fee that comes with it, but this could be negated by the $450 Qantas travel credit you’ll also earn every year. The travel credit can be used on eligible domestic and international Qantas flights, which you have to book through the American Express Travel website.
Amex offers up to 44 days interest free on new purchases, though you’re required to pay out your balance in full each month in order to be eligible. You’ll also want to stay on top of your monthly statement so you can avoid this card’s high interest rate.
You can earn uncapped Qantas Points with this card – provided you meet the conditions – and you can secure points faster by adding extra cards for family members to your account at no cost.

AMEX IS GREAT FOR REWARDS POINTS (THEY HAVE A HIGHER POINT PER DOLLAR THAN OTHER CARDS) AND THEY ALSO HAVE FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE. DOWNSIDE IS THAT ITS ON THE MORE EXPENSIVE SIDE
I have been with AMEX for 20 years. Great for overseas transactions and good rewards system.
I just recently received the Amax card, after 30 day they asked me to pay full amount of 1,750 it’s the annual fee that I didn’t used , I pay a little bit but they suspended my account. Called the customer service but still no option to help. Dissatisfied….
The rewards systems and flexibility is the main appeal. However, processes are long especially in regards to disputes. There is lack of protection and communications.
Fantastic customer service and bonus offers, love getting money off every month with certain deals. The essential is the best as there is no annual fee.
Loved my AMEX card and how helpful they have been with any issues or even once a scam. It's easy to use and see my points accumulating. Perhaps the app needs an update or fresh look though.
Good rewards points that you can use to pay interest charges. But not all businesses accept american express so it limits its use. Would be handy for travel though.
It’s a great card to travel with. And the customer service has always been great
Since joining last year in 2022, American Express earns my highest recommendation due to the support team's outstanding customer service and the benefits of their Essentials Credit Card. This card impressively provides 1.25 Membership Reward points (excluding government transactions which provides 1 point) per dollar spent without any annual fee, effectively offering a 0.06% cashback on virtually all purchases. These points never expire, allowing you to accumulate them for long-term benefits. Additionally, the exclusive deals they offer for selected stores via their app and website help you reduce your costs on everyday purchases, adding extra value to the card. However, some merchants might not accept American Express cards and foreign transaction fees apply will apply for overseas purchases (in person/online) similar to most other credit cards. Overall, American Express stands out as a reliable choice for those seeking exceptional customer service, a no fee card that still rewards you for spending and discounts on everyday shopping.
I just feel it's quite a vanilla offering. They've become complacent, and should strive to offer more.
There are a range of American Express credit cards available in Australia for personal or business use, including rewards cards, Frequent Flyer cards and no annual fee options.
American Express is accepted at thousands of locations across Australia – here’s an overview of some of the major retailers and brands:
Supermarkets – Coles, Woolworths, Harris Farm, IGA
Liquor – BWS, Dan Murphy’s, First Choice Liquor, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars
Fuel – 7-Eleven, Ampol, BP, Coles Express
Department stores – David Jones, Myer
Other major retailers – Big W, Bunnings, Chemist Warehouse, Kmart, Priceline, Target
Electronics – Bing Lee, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, The Good Guys
Airlines – Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad, Jetstar, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia
The American Express Platinum Charge Card arguably comes with the most perks, though it also has the highest annual fee of Amex’s personal cards at $1,450 per year.
American Express says its online application form takes about 10 minutes to complete, and you’ll need to provide information such as your driver’s licence, employment details, income, superannuation and living expenses. It will also complete a credit check as part of your application process.
Whether or not you get approved for an American Express credit card depends on all these factors.
American Express points don’t expire, provided your account is active and in good standing. To be in good standing simply means to pay the full amount due on your statement each month.
