Frequently asked questions about Travel Insuranz

Q1. Who can apply for Travel Insuranz policies?

You can take out a travel insurance policy with Travel Insuranz as long as you are:

Q2. When’s the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy?

In general, it's best to buy your travel insurance policy as soon as you start booking your trip - that way, if something unexpected happens and you need to cancel, you’ll be covered by your travel insurance. You can buy your policy up to 12 months before leaving on your trip.

Travel Insuranz also offer cover if you’ve already left Australia and decided last minute that you will need travel insurance, as long as you are planning to return to Australia. If you do buy your policy after you leave Australia, it’s important to remember that there is a 48 hour delay before your cover starts.

Q3. Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under Travel Insuranz policies?

Travel Insuranz policies cover 37 pre-existing medical conditions automatically and without any extra premium, including chronic sinusitis, asthma and insulin resistance. These 37 conditions are covered automatically only so long as you have not been hospitalised for them in the past 24 months or sought medical advice on them in the 14 days before buying your policy.
If you’re travelling with a pre-existing medical condition, check out Mozo’s handy guide to finding travel insurance that works for you.

Q4. Can I extend my policy while I am travelling?

If you decide to extend your trip and would like to extend your Travel Insuranz policy as well, you can do so by applying for an extension via your online account. You’ll have to answer a few questions on your health and circumstances, but usually, you’ll be able to extend up until 12 months from the original start date of your policy.
If your original policy has already ended you’ll have to apply for a new one, and if your circumstances have changed (for example you have identified a medical condition that is not covered under Travel Insuranz policies) your premium may also change.
If you need to extend your policy for reasons beyond your control (for example if a flight is cancelled) then your policy will be automatically extended for up to 21 days.

Q5. What if I don’t have a return ticket?

If you’re not planning to come back to Australia or haven’t book a return flight yet, Travel Insuranz will cover you under a one-way travel insurance policy. You’ll have to nominate a ‘final destination’ for your travel and your policy will run out on a certain date, just like a regular travel insurance policy.

Q6. Is it possible to cancel my Travel Insuranz policy?

Travel Insuranz offer a 14 day cooling off period in case you change your mind about a travel insurance policy. You’ll have to submit the request for cancellation via their website and as long as you haven’t started your trip or made any claims on your policy, you should be entitled to a full refund of the premium you’ve paid.
The cooling off period does not apply to policies you buy after you’ve left Australia, and outside of the 14 day period, you are not entitled to any refund.

Exclusions to look out for in Travel Insuranz policies

It’s important to know the fine print of your travel insurance policy so that you know exactly what you’re covered for, and what conditions might mean your claim is rejected. You should read your PDS and know the details of your own policy, but to make it a bit easier, here at Mozo we’ve collected some of the common conditions that will usually apply to your Travel Insuranz policy to make things a little easier for you.

I was travelling with MSC cruises when my purse was stolen from on deck while my back was turned. A claim was lodged to Suresafe travel insurance for a 9ct gold bracelet that was inside the purse. The claim was paid after a few, more detailed questions were asked within three weeks of the original claim being lodged. I did provide as much detailed information as possible and was pleasantly surprised with the efficiency of the whole process.
