Part of the Suncorp group, well-known insurance provider AAMI has been going strong since 1970. Not long after it started all those years ago, it released its famous jingle ‘Lucky you’re with AAMI’ which has been playing on Australian TV and radio ever since. No wonder we all know it so well!

AAMI’s comprehensive car insurance policy won a Mozo Experts Choice Award in the Exceptional Value Senior Driver Insurance category in both 2023 and 2024.

This long lasting insurance company offers a number of cover options to Aussies, including comprehensive and third party car insurance. Keep scrolling for more information on what insurance policies AAMI can offer your wheels.

Our verdict

AAMI’s comprehensive car insurance offers the reliability you’d expect from such an established insurer. While it's not loaded with features, it does offer everything you need from a comprehensive policy plus the ability to add a few optional extras like roadside assistance and excess-free windshield cover.

But where it really shines is in the discounts department - allowing you to stack a variety of discounts for potentially significant savings: $50 off your first year’s premium for buying online, up to 15% off your yearly premium via the No Claims Bonus and even an additional discount for completing a skilled driver course.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that AAMI has captured the Mozo Experts Choice Award for Exceptional Value in the Senior Drivers category for two consecutive years.

However, the policy is not without its drawbacks: the excess structure is a bit complicated with various levels for young, inexperienced and learner drivers. And the lack of a choice of repairer could be a dealbreaker for those who have a mechanic of their own.

At the end of the day, if you're after a policy from a trusted insurer and have the safe driving bonafides needed for the discounts, AAMI’s comprehensive insurance is worth considering.

AAMI Car Insurance Key Features

AAMI offers flexible car insurance options across all their policies:

AAMI Car Insurance FAQs

Does AAMI offer a choice of excess?

Yes, AAMI offers a choice of excess from $695 to $2,245—a reasonable range, though some competitors go as low as $0 or as high as $5,000. AAMI markets this as ‘flexi-excess,’ though it’s more or less standard across the industry, making the label feel like meaningless marketspeak.

Selecting a higher standard excess can lower your premium, while a lower excess reduces your costs at claim time.

It’s also worth noting that AAMI has a set of additional excesses that can’t be adjusted. While this is common across providers, AAMI’s structure is particularly complex, including $400 for listed drivers under 25, $1,400 for unlisted drivers under 25, $400 for listed inexperienced drivers over 25, $1,400 for unlisted inexperienced drivers over 25 and $400 for learner drivers.

Is there a cooling-off period for AAMI car insurance?

Yes, there is a 21-day cooling-off period. If you decide to cancel your policy within 21 days of purchasing it (and you haven't made a claim), you'll receive a full refund of any premiums paid.

Does AAMI cover modifications to my car?

Yes, AAMI automatically covers modifications as long as they’re listed on your Certificate of Insurance and noted in your policy at the time you take out the policy. If you make any modifications after your policy starts, you’ll need to notify AAMI. Otherwise the new mods may not be covered.

How does AAMI determine the value of my car?

AAMI offers both market value and agreed value options, with an ‘agreed value’ policy typically costing more.:

  • Market value. The current market worth of your car, factoring in its age and condition.
  • Agreed value. A fixed amount you and AAMI agree on when starting the policy, staying consistent throughout the policy term.
How do I make a claim with AAMI?

You can lodge a claim through AAMI’s website, mobile app, or by calling their 24/7 claims line at 13 22 44. Have key details ready, including incident specifics, contact information for involved parties, and any supporting documents like photos or police reports.
