How did you get into insurance and superannuation?

When I switched careers from marketing analytics to full-time writing, my first role was covering insurance. At the time, it felt like a random placement, but in hindsight, it was a perfect fit. My background in research and analytics gave me an edge when comparing complex insurance products side-by-side and digging into product disclosure statements to uncover what sets certain policies apart.

I also take pride in translating all that complexity into simple, clear explanations—so readers can easily see what they’re covered for and what they’re not.

Superannuation has become my newest passion. As someone who’s in the middle part of his career, I’ve taken a closer look at my own super and realised how important it is to get this right. I hope to help others navigate it with the same level of care and understanding.

I’ve spent the last eight years writing about insurance, credit reporting, superannuation, business, marketing and more—always with the goal of making the complex simple and empowering readers to make confident decisions.

How do stay informed about the insurance and superannuation sectors?

For insurance—an industry that, despite some exciting innovations from insurtech companies, remains largely unchanged at its core—my go-to source is Mozo Marketview. This in-house database tracks policy details in near real time, making it easy to spot even the smallest changes and compare coverage side by side.

Superannuation, by contrast, is far more dynamic, with frequent changes driven by government policy. To stay across it, I subscribe to newsletters, keep in touch with industry contacts, and monitor updates from key organisations like APRA and the ATO.

For both, I make it a habit to check the headlines in The Australian Financial Review and The Sydney Morning Herald. But my real secret weapon? Reddit. Subreddits like AusFinance let me see what everyday Aussies are actually talking about, which keeps me focused on what matters most.

Do you have any special awards, qualifications or memberships?

My qualifications include RG146 Generic Knowledge and RG146 Superannuation, and I’m currently completing RG146 Tier 2 General Insurance. These are ASIC-required certifications for providing general financial product advice to retail customers. I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing, specialising in journalism, and a Master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications.

And while it’s not directly related to finance, I’ve also completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training—proof I can dive deep into details and still keep my balance.

Can you share a personal money tip you live by?

Making voluntary contributions to your super can give your retirement savings a triple boost: you’ll grow your nest egg, pay less tax on those funds than if they stayed in your bank account, and potentially lower your taxable income—helping you pay less tax overall. Just check with your accountant or financial adviser to make sure it’s the right move for your situation.
