Mozo Experts Choice Superannuation Awards Methodology
How did we choose the winners?
The Mozo Experts Choice Awards in Superannuation are designed to recognise the best value super options for Australians who are in the accumulation phase and building their retirement savings. For our 2026 awards assessment we have looked for investment options in the areas that matter to most Australians – MySuper options and diversified pre-mixed choice options. The winners were split into categories based on how they ranked on either net returns over a period of time, or on aggregate fees – again, because those are the things that really matter for long term performance.
We based our calculations on the APRA Quarterly Superannuation Product Statistics dataset effective 31 March 2025. We augmented this dataset with our own checks and corrections to ensure data quality and with reviews of up-to-date Product Disclosure Statements and other publications during August 2025. We did not assess restricted funds, pension products, insurance cover or other member benefits.
Australia's Best Superfund and Highly Commended Super Fund Awards
We have identified the best provider across the Superannuation assessments, naming them as Australia's Best Super Fund, and those performing very competitively as Highly Commended Super Funds. The following winners have demonstrated outstanding performance in multiple categories.
- Hostplus has been crowned Australia’s Best Super Fund for 2026. They were a standout in the key Exceptional MySuper category, and took out wins in the Gen X and Millennial fund-level categories. They also had seven winning options across the various Low Fee categories.
- Earning a Highly Commended Super Fund award, Colonial First State performed very well with multiple wins for their FirstChoice products. Their Employer Super was a winner in the Exceptional MySuper category, while their Wholesale Personal Super products took out Exceptional Growth and High Growth wins. They also won the awards for each of the Generations scenarios.
- First Super was another standout performer, winning a Highly Commended Super Fund award. They were winners in the Exceptional MySuper, High Growth and Growth categories, and also won the Gen X and Millennial awards.
Exceptional MySuper criteria
The winners for this category have shown the strongest investment returns after fees, across a range of different time horizons and account balances.
We looked at returns on a $50,000, $100,000 and $250,000 balance, over 3, 5 and 10 years. Options with less than 5 years of performance data were deemed ineligible.
For Lifestage products, where the investment mix, performance and fees vary by age, our process is to calculate weighted average returns across a person’s working life - assumed to be ages 18-64 inclusive.
Exceptional Super - High Growth, Growth, Balanced and Conservative criteria
These awards recognise funds for having demonstrated outstanding net benefits in one of their pre-mixed diversified investment options. The awards are judged using the same process as the Exceptional MySuper category, with net returns across the same balance and time horizon scenarios.
We assessed all pre-mixed, multi-sector investment options, and categorised them into one of the four different categories according to their target asset allocation to growth assets: High Growth over 90%; Growth over 70%; Balanced over 50% and Conservative 50% or less.
Low Fee MySuper criteria
This category recognises funds with MySuper options that have fees among the lowest in the market. Products were assessed on their total fees across three different balance scenarios.
But even the lowest fees may not be an advantage if the fund performance is not up to scratch. To recognise this, we exclude from the Low Fees award any MySuper options with average net return performance in the bottom quartile.
Low Fee Super - High Growth, Growth, Balanced and Conservative criteria
These awards are each judged using the same process as the Low Fee MySuper category, with fees across the same balance scenarios.
Exceptional Super for Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z criteria
To assess the best funds for each of Gen X and Millennials we looked at performance net of fees on a set of investment options that suit the range of growth asset allocations that people of that age typically invest in, and
We considered both MySuper and diversified Choice options and assessed them using the net performance methodology as per the Exceptional MySuper and Exceptional Super categories, but using balance assumptions reflective of a typical balance at that age.
For MySuper Lifestage options, our weighted average was limited only to the age bands relevant to the cohort.
For Choice options, for Gen X we assume an 80/20 split between Growth and Balanced options and for Millennials we assume a 50/50 mix between High Growth and Growth. In building these portfolio mixes, we included investment options with up to 5% lower growth asset weighting than our standard definitions.
To assess the best funds for Gen Z we followed a similar approach to the above, except calculations were based on fees only, not performance, with Choice funds spread 50/50 between High Growth and Growth options and assuming a $50,000 balance.
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
How we manage conflicts of interest
Mozo Experts Choice Awards are awarded irrespective of a product provider’s commercial relationship with Mozo. The Awards are based on objective verifiable facts and analysis wherever possible, and any assumptions made are set out in this report. Mozo’s research team analyses product data and determines the winners in each Mozo Experts Choice category without reference to Mozo’s sales or commercial functions.
Providers do not pay to enter the Mozo Experts Choice Awards.
Should a winning provider wish to use the Mozo Experts Choice Awards badges in their own marketing activities, Mozo charges them a license fee.
