Experts Choice Awards are awarded only to the top products that meet the selection criteria in each awards category.
No, but we certainly made an effort to compare as many international travel insurance policies and travel insurers as possible that are available for Australians. The total number of quote data compared for the Exceptional Value awards was 271 policies and the top cover from 60 travel insurers for the Exceptional Quality awards.
To be considered for an Exceptional Value award for Basic products, an insurance policy simply needed to have unlimited overseas medical cover. To be considered for the Comprehensive award and for the Ski, Cruise and Annual categories, they needed unlimited medical, at least $7,500 of luggage cover per traveller and at least $15,000 cancellation cover per traveller.
Value for Basic and Comprehensive products was judged on the average cost over 4 different destinations for a family of 4 travelling for 14 days. Cruise and Ski cover was judged based on quotes for a single destination (Japan and South Pacific, respectively). Annual products were judged on a 12 month plan for a single traveller taking trips of up to 30 days each. Price variations for Seniors were not considered.
If you’re after a low cost option travel insurance option for your next overseas holiday a good place to start is to review our winners list for the Exceptional Value awards. The cost of travel insurance depends on a number of factors including the length of your trip, age of travellers and destination. Many insurers also have additional cover options for things like sports cover and pre-existing conditions. These may increase the cost of insurance.
