For six years now, the Mozo Experts Choice Awards have revealed the best banking, credit cards, insurance, energy providers and so much more. And for the first time, we bring data analysis together to crown Australia’s Best Online Grocery Service providers.
"For the inaugural year of the Mozo Experts Choice Awards for Online Grocery Service we took into consideration many factors that influence a customer's online shopping experience. From variety, price, ease of website navigation and delivery, we analysed and compared two of the major national providers. Woolworths came out as a clear winner in every category, with a clean sweep of Mozo's newest awards," said Mozo Experts Choice Award judge, Peter Marshall.
In carrying out the Mozo Experts Choice Awards in Online Grocery Services, we analysed the only two services that cover the full range of groceries and are nationally available: Coles and Woolworths.
“Whilst there are a growing number of online grocery services, none of them, aside from Woolworths and Coles, are able to offer their ranges on a national scale for accurate comparison,” said Marshall.
For details on how we crunched the numbers and determined the Online Grocery Service winners see our methodology report.
Woolworths took out every category assessed for these awards, and so was crowned our Online Grocery Service of the Year. Whether it's price, range, ease of ordering or flexibility of delivery service, Woolworths just couldn't be beaten.
Mozo's judges compared the prices for a basket of 252 grocery items and found Woolworths came out cheaper overall. Items compared were a cross-section of the types of groceries households might purchase regularly, and included both big brand and home brand versions where equivalent products could be identified. Data was collected on 5 different dates and for 11 different locations including capital cities and major regional centres. The prices were averaged, then combined into an annual grocery cost figure using published statistics on the spending patterns of the average Australian household.
To find out which online grocery service offers the widest product range, the judges counted the number of different items available - including different varieties and different brands - across a sample of 11 product categories including fruit, cheese, bakery items and hair care. Woolworths decisively beat out its competition in almost every category.
To find the best ordering experience, the judges considered how easily they could use the website to locate items, the amount of information about products and how it is displayed, and the range of payment options available. While the functionality offered by the two major national services was broadly similar, Woolworths edged ahead in several key areas including an extra payment option, another way to filter search results, and smarter sorting.
You want to get your groceries delivered with the most convenience for the least cost. The judges assessed the cost of delivery, but also the level of choice and control offered to customers. They found Woolworths as offering a superior delivery service based on cost and for the ability to track the driver on their live map service.
The Mozo Experts Choice Awards recognise products that deliver amazing value or are beneficial to Australian consumers. Our experts base their decision on hard-nosed calculations of value to the consumer, using Mozo’s extensive product database and research capacity. Providers don't pay to be in the running and we don't play favourites either.

In carrying out the Mozo Experts Choice Awards in Online Grocery Service, we analysed a basket of 252 goods that represent typical household needs, with each item falling into a category defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
A mixture of private label and leading brand items were used to form the basis of a price comparison. Private label products chosen were equivalent in quality and size (weight, volume or quantity depending on the product). In cases where these products weren’t equal in size, the price of the smaller item was adjusted to match the quantity of the larger item. Leading brand products chosen were the exact same item from each service. Only products where comparable items could be found across all services assessed were considered.
