In an ideal world, our furry little buddies would be in the best of health all the time. We would never have to worry about them getting sick or face an enormous vet bill.

Sadly though, we don’t live in an ideal world and pets do get poorly. This is where Trupanion comes in. Trupanion is a pet insurance provider with nearly 20 years of experience providing cover for pet owners. In fact, here at Mozo we were so impressed with Trupanion’s policy, that we awarded the company a 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Exceptional Quality Pet Insurance.

Expert Judge Peter Marshall said, “When assessing pet insurance policies for the Exceptional Quality awards, we especially look for flexible plans with a generous number of benefits. Trupanion ticked all those boxes and more.”

About Trupanion

Although Trupanion only launched in Australia last year, it has been providing insurance for pet pooches and kitties in the US and Canada for almost two decades.

In Australia, Trupanion is managed by Dr Stephen Rose. After being a vet for 18 years, Rose knows just how useful pet insurance can be. Rose said, “I wish Trupanion was around when I was working full-time as a vet.”

Trupanion’s award-winning pet insurance

To keep things simple, Trupanion offers one pet insurance plan. It can be taken out for your pawfect pupper or cutesy kitty. Cover includes:

  • 90% coverage for new injuries and illnesses, after you meet your excess
  • Dental illness and injury (your pet’s teeth must be seen to at least once every 12 months)
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Surgeries
  • Hospital stays
  • Medications
  • Prosthetic devices

Unlike other pet insurance companies, you can take out a new policy for your furry friend up to the age of 13. Just keep in mind that the older they are, the higher your premium will be.

Another thing to be mindful of is that as with most insurance policies, there are waiting periods. The waiting period for injuries is five days and the waiting period for illnesses is thirty days. Finally, as with any type of cover, always make sure you read through the PDS thoroughly, before signing on the dotted line.

The Mozo Experts Choice Awards

If this is the first time you’ve stumbled across them, the Mozo Experts Choice Awards are a set of awards designed to highlight market leading financial products. Conducted by Mozo’s team of data experts, these awards have been going strong for seven years. They cover everything from home loans to credit cards and of course pet insurance.

When assessing the winners for the Exceptional Quality Pet Insurance awards, our team looked at plans that offered both flexibility and a generous number of benefits. These awards look at the quality of the pet insurance plan and do not take price into account.

Some of the benefits we look for with the Quality awards include a high annual benefit, dental cover, hip surgery and replacement and the ability to vary your excess. Check out our methodology report for more details on how the awards are judged.
