Key features

There are two options to choose from when you sign up for a David Jones American Express Platinum Card: Membership Rewards or Qantas Frequent Flyer. The main difference between the two is that the Qantas Frequent Flyer option lets you automatically convert your points earned into Qantas Frequent Flyer Points.

While the David Jones American Express Platinum Card acts and works much like a regular rewards card, its huge advantage is that it provides unique rewards specifically for David Jones shoppers.

First up, you'll have your choice of 12 months interest free with no deposit when you spend $500 or more on your card, in one transaction; or 60 months interest free with no deposit when you spend $1,000 or more on your card, in one transaction, across all departments in store or online at David Jones.

Additionally, you'll also have the Three Months Pay Later Option, allowing deferred payment for 3 months when you spend $50 or more on your card, in one transaction, across all departments in store or online at David Jones.

Talking points, if you choose the Membership Rewards option you can score a huge 4 Membership Reward Points per $1 spent at David Jones. To sweeten the deal even further, you’ll receive 3 Membership Reward Points per $1 spent at major supermarkets and petrol stations, and 1 Membership Reward Point per $1 spent everywhere else.

On the other hand, if you opt for the Qantas Frequent Flyer option you'll earn a bumper 2 Qantas points per $1 spent at David Jones, 1.5 points per $1 spent at major supermarkets and petrol stations, and 1 point per $1 spent everywhere else.

To help you dive in the deep end of points earning, you’ll also have the chance to earn 30,000 Membership Reward Points points or 15,000 Qantas Points when you're approved and spend $750 at retailers excluding David Jones within the first three months (new Card Members only).

You can redeem all your hard-earned points to purchase things online at davidjones.com, receive gift cards, book flights and more.

The card also comes with a number of other perks, such as an extra 90 days purchase protection, online fraud protection and up to four additional cardholders for free. Plus, you'll have the choice of receiving no interest for 12 months when you spend $500 or more in a single transaction, or no interest for 60 months when you spend $1,000 or more in a single transaction at David Jones, online or in-store.

snapshot
Who is it good for

The obvious answer here is: people who frequently shop at David Jones and are interested in the exclusive benefits that this card awards, but anyone that usually uses their card when grocery shopping and buying petrol will find themselves racking up points rather quickly.

Any catches

While certainly not the worst on the market by any means, the $295 annual fee is worth keeping in mind, so make sure you’ll get enough value out of the perks to justify the price tag.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

About David Jones

David Jones is an Australian retailer whose primary business is a chain of premium department stores. In 2008, the company announced it would be launching its own David Jones American Express card, complete with a rewards package for its customers. The David Jones American Express Card is the credit card that turns every dollar you spend into Gift Points, which can then be redeemed for items such as the DJs Gift Card or flights with Qantas and other leading airlines.
