Is Aldi Home Insurance the smart way to protect your palace?

You’ve no doubt seen all sorts of things on sale at your local Aldi supermarket, especially in the middle aisle, from night vision goggles to industrial meat slicers. So, is it any surprise that you can now buy insurance from Australia’s third-largest grocery retailer

Aldi has partnered up with Aussie insurance distributor Honey to power its home and contents insurance policy with smart sensors designed to spot issues before they turn into problems.

What’s more, installing the complimentary sensors around your home, and keeping them active, means you might be eligible for the Smart Home Program discount. This discount could save you up to 8% on your premium each year (T&Cs apply). More information about the discount can be found in the policy’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

According to Aldi, the sensors send a notification to your phone when it detects water leaks, open doors and windows, changes in temperature, alarms, and increases in mould risk.

The idea is, that the sensors may be able to catch something like a water leak early before it becomes an insurance claim later down the track. It’s a win for you because you might not need to make a claim and pay the excess, and it’s a win for the insurer because they won’t need to pay out a claim. Hence the discount.

But what does Aldi’s home and contents insurance even cover?

At first glance, there’s all the usual insurance benefits, like:

  • Natural disaster cover
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • New for old replacement
  • Water damage
  • Temporary accommodation
  • Legal liability.

But the policy also has a range of optional extras you can use to tailor your coverage to your needs. These include:

  • Accidental damage
  • Lost or damaged mobile phones
  • Extra protection for specific valuables
  • Lost or damaged small business equipment and stock
  • Portable contents cover
  • Motor burnout repair or replacement in home appliances under 10 years old.

For the full range of benefits, exclusions, limits, and sub-limits, make sure you read the Aldi Household Insurance PDS, which can be found on the Aldi Insurance website.

While the smart sensors are a cool piece of tech, it’s important to consider if the cover is right for you and your home. So, make sure you compare home and contents insurance policies to see what else is out there.
