AGL’s demand response program to kick off nationwide: how it can help you save on your energy bill

Let’s face it, a lot of us have had to swelter through one too many nights this summer without the aircon, all with the hope of saving a few bucks on our energy bill

But what if there was a way to make the choice worth your while? Turns out there is and many Aussies across the country are already doing it!

This summer, thousands of AGL customers in New South Wales and Victoria participated in a trial run of the Peak Energy Rewards demand response program, which saw them save an average of 30% of their regular usage.

Demand response is an initiative that allows customers to reduce their energy bill by choosing to switch off during times where electricity is at its highest demand. Customers who participate are then rewarded with a discount or credit on their bill.

After a positive response from the trial, AGL announced yesterday that the program will now be made available to up to one million customers across NSW, VIC, SA and QLD before next summer.

“The response to this program has been overwhelmingly positive and we are proud to be able to offer it more widely across Australia, because it means more customers will reap the rewards and save on their bills,” said AGL Chief Customer Officer, Christine Corbett.

“The best part is that being involved in the program doesn’t cost customers anything, there’s no need to pay for equipment or install anything. It’s free, voluntary and accessible for anyone with a smart meter.”

Corbett went on to explain that the demand response was a win-win for both customers and the electricity grid.

“It delivered benefits to the energy grid and we saw a significant, consistent load reductions across all peak events.”

AGL not alone in demand response uptake

While AGL customers are set to benefit from savings this summer, it looks like they won't be the only ones.

Powershop customers in Victoria can take part in the Curb Target program, where customers who reduce their electricity usage by at least 10% and reduce their power by at least 1kWh for each hour of the nominated ‘event’ will receive a $10 saving on their bill.

Customers involved in the Curb Target will also go into the draw to win one of 50 $100 Powershop savings on their bill.

EnergyAustralia’s PowerResponse program allows customers to be treated to a $10 reward if they reduce their usage by 20% - 49%, there’s even the option to bump the reward up to $20 if a customer reduces their usage by 50%.

Finally, customers who take part in a survey after an event will automatically receive a $5 bill credit.

But of course, another easy way to save on your energy bill is to switch to a better value electricity deal. So if you’d like to find out how much you could be saving, enter your postcode below to get started!
