How did we choose Australia’s Best Banking Apps?

Australians are now accustomed to using banking apps and these platforms now play a central role in their everyday financial activities, making seamless and efficient functionality essential for banking providers. The Mozo Experts Choice Banking App awards identify which banks offer the most feature-rich apps, to give you full visibility and control over your banking directly on your phone.

For the Mozo Experts Choice Awards for Banking App 2025, the judges looked at the features available in banking apps, assessed the relative importance of those features, and determined which apps offered users the leading functionality. Among all the contenders, the title of Australia's Best Banking App was awarded to the top scoring provider, while the next best were recognised with the title of Highly Commended Banking App.

We considered Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayID, PayTo, automatic spend categorisation and push notifications as mandatory features for award winners. Additionally, banks with household deposits totalling less than $1,600 million, reported by APRA in March 2025, were excluded from the analysis. 

We ranked each banking app using scores based on the following features:

• Depth of information about individual transactions, transaction history,  the ability to search or hide specific transactions, advanced filtering options and downloading statements.
• Spending categorisation including changing or adding category names to specific transactions, track how spending in a specific category changes over time. 
• Control of accounts including ability to easily update personal details, biometric login, locking of card, changing of PIN, limiting daily withdrawals, easy notification of overseas travel.
• Facility for secure discussions and real time chat with customer service team members.
• Option to easily open new accounts from the app.
• Smart watch integration, especially viewing account balance.
• Savings goal setting and progress tracking. 
• Features predicting  upcoming bills, options to add or hide bills from predicted expenses, payday notifications, the option for a quick balance view.
• Functionality warning for insecure  Wi-Fi network connections, flagging or blocking the abusive descriptions, option to block gambling transactions. 
• Cardless cash withdrawal at ATMs.
