We made 3 predictions in 2025 for where home insurance was headed - here's how we scored.

At the start of the year, we threw out a few guesses about where home insurance might be headed. Now that 2024 is almost done and dusted, it’s time to see how our predictions stacked up.

Overall, I think we did alright, but I’ll let you be the judge. Let’s dig in!

1. Smart home technology boom

Prediction: By the end of 2024, a major Australian home insurer would offer smart home technology similar to what insurtech Honey Insurance currently offers.

Outcome: Not quite how we imagined it.

Honey Insurance may be on their way to becoming that major insurer. This year, they partnered with Aldi Insurance and Bank Australia, who will officially distribute Honey policies, bringing Honey’s smart tech into even more homes across Australia. So while we didn’t see anyone like AAMI or Allianz develop their own versions of smart home insurance, we may be witnessing the birth of a new major player.

2. Insurer presence in high-risk areas

Prediction: Major insurers were expected to continue offering coverage in Queensland, with no large-scale exits like those seen in Florida.

Outcome: Spot on!

No major insurer has completely bailed on Far North Queensland, meaning residents are still able to find protection for their home, albeit at a significant cost.  So while it’s still a minefield up there, it could be worse. The loss of any major players due to the unprecedented nature of QLD’s natural disasters could drive premiums even higher - and leave some homeowners completely out to dry.

Just ask Florida.

3. Building resilience with climate-conscious coverage

Prediction: We’ll see an Australian insurer introduce a policy that offers clear and meaningful premium discounts for homeowners who make certified climate-resilient upgrades.

Outcome: Not quite.

Looking back, this prediction was clearly a bit out there as insurance isn’t exactly the most dynamic industry.

So while it’s still possible to shave money off your home insurance bill by making some upgrades around the edges (smart security, bushfire proofing, etc) - there’s still no policy made specifically for climate-resilient homes.

Maybe we should focus on building those homes first.

Our scorecard

Let's call it a 1.5 out of 3. In the predictions business 50% ain't too shabby!

Two were pretty close, even if they didn’t unfold exactly as we imagined. The third? A bit of a long shot, but it’s an idea that still makes sense for the future.

Hopefully, we’ll see more progress next year.
