What should I know about Aussietravelcover Insurance?

Q1. Can I apply for Aussietravelcover insurance policies?

If you’d like to apply for an Aussietravelcover insurance policy, you’ll have to:

If you’re over 51, you can still buy an Aussietravelcover insurance policy, but extra premiums will apply, depending on how old you are. Check out our guide on travel insurance for seniors if you want to know what other options there are for older travellers.

If you’re a temporary resident, there are some further conditions, including:

Q2. When should I buy my travel insurance policy?

The best time to buy a travel insurance policy is when you start booking tickets or accommodation - that way, if something does go wrong, you’ll be covered under the cancellation part of your policy.
Having said that, Aussietravelcover policies are available up until your departure date, and after you leave Australia. If you do buy your policy after leaving Australia, your cover will begin when you’re issued a certificate of insurance, but keep in mind that there is a 48 hour waiting period between when your policy begins and when you can make any claim arising from illness or medical emergency.

Q3. I have a pre-existing medical condition. Will this be covered under my Aussietravelcover policy?

It depends what your condition is. Like most travel insurance policies, Aussietravelcover has a list of pre-existing medical conditions which are automatically covered at no extra charge. These include asthma, conjunctivitis and a single, uncomplicated pregnancy up to 23 weeks.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition not listed, you have two options: you can opt for a non-medical policy, or you can apply for cover for your condition.
The exception is any condition for which you’ve been hospitalised in the last 18 months - those won’t be covered.
Find more information in our guide for travelling with a pre-existing medical condition so you can choose a policy that will give you the cover you need.

Q4. Can I extend my Aussietravelcover insurance policy while I am travelling?

Yep! If you have to extend for reasons beyond your control (maybe your flight was canceled) then you can extend free of charge. If you’ve decided you’d like to travel a little longer, then you’ll have to apply for the extension 7 days before your original policy ends, and you’ll be issued with a new policy and pay a new premium.
Keep in mind that the new policy may not be the same as the old one, and won’t cover any medical conditions you came down with during your original policy, and won’t automatically cover any pre-existing medical conditions that you had to apply for on your original policy. So make sure you check that you’re getting the right cover when you extend!

Q5. What if I want to cancel my travel insurance policy?

If you decide you’d like to cancel your Aussietravelcover insurance policy, you have a 14 day cooling-off period, in which you can cancel for a full refund, as long as you haven’t started your journey or made any claims on your policy.
If your travel insurance policy was part of visa requirements for travelling, Aussietravelcover does reserve the right to alert visa authorities that you’ve cancelled.
You can cancel after the 14 day period, but you won’t be given any refund on your premium.

Go the extra yard

I have a pre-existing medical condition and find it almost impossible to get travel insurance. A clever company should offer policies that exclude preexisting conditions but cover all other contingencies.
