Unlike a lot of other insurance providers, Allianz Australia actually underwrites its own policies. In fact, it even underwrites insurance products for a range of other Australian financial institutions, some of which include NAB, Westpac, AFG, Qudos Bank and Bank Australia.
Allianz offers comprehensive and third party property car insurance all across Australia. It also offers compulsory third party car insurance (CTP cover for short) in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.
Allianz’s comprehensive car insurance is the highest level of cover it has on offer and includes:
Up to $20 million of legal liability
Cover for damage to your car, including for a not-at-fault accident and accidental loss
The reasonable cost of towing, following an insured incident
New replacement car (applies if your car is less than two years old)
Up to $100 of daily rental car costs, following a theft or not-at-fault accident
Up to $500 for emergency repairs
Up to $750 for emergency accommodation and travel (as long your vehicle is more than 100 kilometres away from where you usually park it and you did not already intend to pay for overnight accommodation)
Up to $500 to replace a child seat or baby capsule (following one incident)
Up to $1,000 for lock re-keying/re-coding if your car keys are stolen
Up to $1,000 to cover accidental loss or damage to a trailer or caravan attached to your vehicle
You can also add these optional benefits onto your policy for even more cover:
Safe driver star rating protection (for the first claim in each insurance period)
The removal of basic excess on windscreen claims for one replacement and two repairs in one insurance period (applies where damage to the windscreen is the only damage to your vehicle)
Up to $3,000 of cover for tools of trade damaged or stolen
Up to $100 of daily rental car costs following an accident.
Just keep in mind that any extras you add will up the cost of your premium.
Allianz offers roadside assistance separately through Allianz Partners. It works like a yearly subscription, where you can choose between a platinum membership for $169 or a standard membership for $99.
Besides a 24-hour telephone service, both platinum and standard membership provide help with:
Emergency mechanical repairs
Flat or faulty batteries
Emergency fuel delivery
Flat tyres
Towing (distances vary for metropolitan and regional areas and standard and premium memberships)
Lost or locked keys (up to $200 for premium membership and $150 for standard membership)
Accident coordination
Emergency message relay.
In addition to this, premium membership also offers:
Up to $100 for taxi costs, if your car breaks down and has to be transported to a garage for repairs
Cover for emergency travel including:
- a rental car up to 10 days with a limit of $99 per day
- emergency accommodation for up to 10 nights, up to $150 per night
- alternative transport, if accommodation or a hire car is not available
- relocating your repaired car to you, or providing return transport for you to your car.
While comprehensive car insurance is the highest level of insurance you can get for your wheels, there are still some instances in which you won’t be covered. Some exclusions for Allianz’s comprehensive car insurance policy are:
If your vehicle is used while in an unroadworthy condition
If you exceed your load or passenger limit
If you are transporting passengers for a fee, e.g. renting out your car or using it as a taxi or ridesharing service
Tyre damage
Computer equipment failure.
Read the Allianz’s product disclosure statement for the full list of exclusions.
In New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia you can purchase your CTP insurance from Allianz. Generally CTP insurance includes cover for:
Injuries caused to people, including your passengers, other road users, other passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists and pillion passengers.
Injuries as the result of a trailer (when it is attached to a registered vehicle).
CTP insurance does not cover damage done to your vehicle or someone else’s.
Some features of Allianz’s CTP insurance are:
At-fault driver protection, available to drivers in NSW and QLD. This includes up to $250,000 worth of cover for drivers in NSW and up to $1 million of cover for drivers in QLD. In both cases this cover is only available to drivers over 25 and for certain vehicle classes.
CTP claims specialists at hand to handle your claim
Competitive rates for drivers aged over 30 in NSW.
One step from CTP cover, Allianz’s third party property insurance provides cover for:
Up to $20 million of legal liability
Cover for partial or at-fault accidental loss or damage to someone else’s vehicle
Legal liability when using another vehicle, while yours is being repaired
Up to $5,000 cover if your car is damaged in a not-at-fault accident and the other vehicle is not insured
Cover for approved legal costs from a loss covered in your policy.
Allianz does not offer third party fire and theft car insurance, if you want to insure your car against events like these with Allianz, you will have to opt for comprehensive car insurance.
When it comes to your premium, Allianz will ask you a number of questions to figure out how much you will pay. How high or low it is will be a reflection of how high or low of a risk they deem you to be. In other words, how likely you are to claim with them. Some factors Allianz will take into account are:
The address where you keep your vehicle
What you use your vehicle for, e.g. domestic, rideshare or business
The age of drivers listed on the policy
The gender of drivers listed on the policy
What type of vehicle you drive
How old your vehicle is
What optional extras you add on to your policy
What excess you choose
Your safe driver star rating
What your employment status is.
Yes Allianz does offer its own version of the no claims discount, the ‘Safe Driver Star Rating.’ As with most no claims discounts, Allianz’s Safe Driver Star Rating is based on your claims and driving history. Having a high Safe Driver Star Rating will reduce your premium.
Although, should you make a claim your rating may go down and your premium payments may go up. That is unless you add the star rating protection optional extra onto your policy. The star rating works like this:
New customers can be given a star rating from nil to four, depending on their driving history. This equates to a 5% or 10% discount.
Customers renewing their policy can earn a rating up to six stars and a discount of up to 15%. Plus, customers who achieve a six star rating will also be given the star rating protection at no extra cost.
Having trouble coming up with the cash to pay your premium in one lump sum? With Allianz insurance, you can opt for monthly payments instead - but remember, the catch is that this added flexibility will cost you extra.

When we had to make a claim for our car Allianz was easy to talk to but just the one issue we had with them was the repairer they sent us too, it was abit far away but was the only one they had near us. It took almost 6 months for our car to be seen then another 2 months for our car to be fixed.

I had a highly disappointing experience with Allianz insurance. I purchased an annual car insurance policy, making a full payment on 03/01/2023, believing my vehicle was covered for the entire year. However, my interaction with Allianz took a nightmarish turn when I called them on 16/10/23 to update my car's registration number. To my shock, I was informed that my insurance had been inexplicably canceled due to a supposed "technical glitch." What's even more frustrating is that I received no prior notification or warning about this issue. I was essentially left in the dark for seven months, driving my car uninsured, completely unaware that I had no coverage. To add insult to injury, when they eventually decided to process a refund, it was sent to a credit card that had been closed for more than seven months at the time of the refund. It's now been 14 months since the card was closed, and, as expected, the account no longer exists. This demonstrates a glaring lack of attention to detail on their part and a disregard for their customers' time and money. What's truly infuriating is that, despite all these blunders and their failure to provide any sort of resolution or compensation for the inconvenience and danger I was exposed to by driving without insurance, their proposed solution was to buy an entirely new policy. It's astounding that Allianz couldn't acknowledge their mistake and rectify the situation in a more customer-friendly manner. In summary, Allianz's handling of my car insurance has been utterly unacceptable. Their cancellation of my policy without notice, the mishandling of my refund, and their lack of responsibility for the consequences of their actions make them a company I would strongly advise against doing business with. It's clear that customer satisfaction and safety are not their top priorities.
