Got a prized piece of artwork, or a load of expensive jewellery? You might want to check out QBE’s Contents Insurance. With this policy renters and homeowners alike can protect their precious belongings against damage caused by storms, fires, theft and floods. You’ll also receive up to 60 days worth of cover when you move home, for contents in both your old and new place.
With QBE’s Contents Insurance you will receive a substantial amount of cover for your valuables. Artworks, rugs and antiques are covered up to $20,000 each, there’s up to $800 worth of cover for cash, gift cards, vouchers and coupons and $2,500 worth of cover for jewellery and watches (does not cover smart watches).
Your belongings will be insured for a number of events, including fire, theft, lightning, storms, flooding, earthquakes and accidental breakage of glass in furniture, mirrors and movable light fittings. Cover for electrical motor burnout and damage caused by an animal accidentally trapped inside your home is also included.
Plus if your claim is approved, QBE will pay for emergency temporary repairs, temporary contents storage, improved security and environmental upgrades - where applicable. For temporary storage of contents, QBE will pay either up to 24 months worth of storage costs or 20% of your sum insured (whichever works out less). Improved security applies if your home is broken into by force and insured contents are stolen. In this case, QBE may pay up to $500 towards purchasing and installing additional security.
You’ll even be covered when you move house. That’s right - QBE offers up to 60 days worth of cover for contents in your old and new home. Contents in transit are covered too, against events such as fire, theft, collision and flooding. Speaking of which, you can also upgrade your policy to include ‘portable contents cover.’ Although, this will up the cost of your premium.
Of course as with all insurance policies, there are a few exclusions to keep in mind. This includes conducting business activity at your property. To expand on that, damage that arises as a result of income earning activities will not be covered. This does not apply if you have an office that takes up less than 20% of your home, or you are simply doing office work from home. You also won’t be covered for damage caused intentionally or as a result of illegal activity. Read QBE’s PDS for a full list of general exclusions.
This particular policy would be suited to anyone who wants to make sure their precious belongings are covered. It would work for renters and homeowners alike and might be an option to consider for anyone moving house in the near future!
If you want to pay in instalments, you will wind up paying more. It should also be noted that while jewellery and watches are covered, smart watches are not.

From the time I claimed, the forms were emailed that day, after getting a report back from an electrician the amount was offered and accepted. The whole process was handled very well and professionally, I was impressed with QBE.

I have been with QBE for over a decade and unfortunately seen the demise from knowing and understanding its members, into a corporate machine fuelled by profits. For rural coverage expect plenty of hoops to jump through and additional exclusions especially with water tanks and fire breaks, particularly if you live near crown land. The claims process is a lengthy task that takes unnecessary time to get things in order, however the positive side to this is QBE do pay much more than other insurers. Overall whilst I wouldn't highly recommend, I would definitely seek out the best price and compare each together. I would also ring them directly asking for better deals.

I worked there for 10 years, so I am biased, but I think QBE is good.

I dislike them because I had goods insured in two separate policies and when I shifted, they changed my two policies to one which was meant to be better but they forgot to include some of my belongings to the policy. When I had to make a claim for a lost ring, I only got a third of the value instead of the full value.
