This Tasmanian insurer is kicking goals in every corner of home and contents insurance. When it comes to your four walls and belongings, RACT has got you covered for all kinds of major natural disasters, as well as breakages, theft and malicious damage. The policy also features generous building underinsurance, in case you haven’t valued your home accurately and need a boost when repairs or replacement are necessary.
RACT’s Home & Contents insurance will cover all your bases, with natural events like floods, bushfires, lightning and even earthquakes and tsunamis included in the policy. Beyond wild weather events, your home and belongings will also be covered in the case of theft, explosions and glass breakages.
If the contents on your property is destroyed, it will be replaced with comparable new items, but there are fixed limits for some things. For example, important documents like birth certificates, drivers licences and passports are covered up to $1,000 collectively, and only $300 in cash kept at the address is insured.
Other items like jewellery, antiques and art have flexible limits which you can elect. Remember, a higher limit may mean a higher premium.
Similarly, some items covered under home insurance have fixed limits. This includes up to $1,000 for unfixed building materials and other $1,000 for fixed landscaping elements like trees, plants and lawns. Read the product disclosure statement (PDS) for other variable limits and any optional extras
You won’t have to stress if any building repairs or replacements cost more than your initial valuation, as this policy also includes underinsurance of up to 25%. If you do find yourself in a situation where your place is unlivable, you’ll be happy to know accommodation costs for yourself and your pets are also covered for up to 10% of the sum insured.
And since RACT’s policy took home a 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Awards win in the Exceptional Value category, you know you’re getting a good price for all this cover.
Any homeowner wanting top-value cover for their home and belongings, with underinsurance and optional extras providing a little wiggle room.
Keep an eye out for circumstances in your PDS that might see your claim denied, or accidental damages that are only included if you choose them as optional extras.

Very unhappy with my insurer. Following storm damage in Tasmania they totally reneged on their contractual obligations and have squirmed and wriggled their way into trying to deny a claim. I will be taking my concerns higher.

I feel there are less expensive companies out there but have been with RACT for over fifty years and I find it difficult to look anywhere else. Maybe I should I have been told honour does not come into it with insurance companies.
