Qantas offers up flight vouchers but will Aussies get on board?

Qantas planes lined up for airline customers with flight vouchers

It’s been a rough couple of years for airlines with covid’s disruption, sky-high fuel prices, travellers with tighter budgets and a slow return to business, which is why Qantas is now offering discounts.

This week the airline issued $50 flight discount vouchers to all members of the Frequent Flyer program across Australia and New Zealand.

Having faced high frequency reports of lost luggage, flight delays, cancellations and more, Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has also issued an apology on behalf of the brand.

"On behalf of the national carrier, I want to apologise and assure you that we're working hard to get back to our best,” he said.

Along with this, Qantas will be extending the status of all members with Silver status and above for an extra 12 months.

There has also been a commitment to reward Platinum and Platinum Plus members with additional points, though Qantas have not revealed what the value of these will be.

Qantas also moves on staff challenges

With many of Qantas’ problems having been tied to a 50% increase in staff sick leave and bigger issues in the flight industry, the airline has also hired 1,500 people since April and aims to continue doing so.

The hope is that additional staff and investments in airport technology will make sick leave and absenteeism less of an issue, creating a smoother flight experience for all passengers.

The question remains as to whether Aussies will jump back on board. Some remain sceptical as to whether these changes will be enough to retain loyalty or make real change, but Qantas say the improvements have already been noticeable and will continue to be seen week to week.

To keep yourself protected in case you’re impacted by lost luggage, cancelled flights, or - touch wood - another global pandemic - it’s important to stay safe with a travel insurance policy that suits your circumstances.
