Frequently asked questions about Southern Cross Travel Insurance

Q1. Who can apply for Southern Cross Travel Insurance?

If you’d like to apply for a policy with Southern Cross you’ll need to:

There is no age limit to buying travel insurance policies from Southern Cross, but your age will affect the amount of premium you’ll pay. Dependent children under the age of 17 are covered for no extra charge under both single and family policies.

Q2. Who counts as a dependent?

Southern Cross Travel Insurance defines a dependent as an unmarried child, foster child, stepchild, grandchild, niece or nephew under 17 years of age who is largely dependent on you (the policyholder).

It’s important to note that if your dependent child is under 15 years of age, they aren’t fully covered under the personal accident benefit of your policy. The most that will be paid on a dependent's personal accident claim is $1000.

Q3. Does Southern Cross travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

There are two options to cover pre-existing medical conditions with Southern Cross Travel Insurance:
Controlled conditions - if your medication or treatment has been the same for 6 months and if you haven’t had serious symptoms in the 24 months leading up to buying your insurance, your condition may be considered controlled and covered automatically. You can find a list of these conditions in your PDS and if you’re not sure that your condition counts, check with Southern Cross when you apply for your policy.
Covered conditions - if your condition is not ‘controlled’ or if it arises after you buy your policy you can apply for cover and pay an extra premium if Southern Cross agrees to cover you. You will have to undergo a medical evaluation for this.

If you complete the medical assessment and your condition is not covered, then you can still take out a Southern Cross Travel Insurance policy, but you won’t be covered for any claims relating to your pre-existing medical condition.

Q4. Can I extend my Southern Cross Travel Insurance policy while I am travelling?

Yes! If your trip is delayed by unexpected circumstances, like your airline being delayed, your cover will be extended at no extra cost until you can re-enter Australia.
If you extend your trip voluntarily, you can apply via email for an extension on your Southern Cross Travel Insurance policy before the end date of your original policy. For a single polocy, you won’t be able to get an extension if you’ve already passed the end date of your original insurance, and on a frequent traveller policy, you can apply for an extension up to the 90th day of your trip.
When you extend, you’ll be issued a new policy and pay a new premium.

Q5. Can I cancel my Southern Cross Travel Insurance policy?

If you aren’t happy with your Southern Cross Travel Insurance policy, you can cancel for a full refund of your premium within 14 days of being issued your policy, as long as you haven’t started your trip yet. If you have started your trip, but still cancel within 14 days of being issued your insurance you can still get a refund, but there will be a $35 cancellation fee.
After 14 days or if you’ve made a claim on the policy, you aren’t entitled to a refund.
You can cancel your policy online at the Southern Cross Travel Insurance website.

The rate was very competitive and I researched previous other reviews on the company. They had won numerous service awards and were recommended by another travel credit card company. The application was easy and very comprehensive. I did not make a claim but feel that this would have been a flowing process as all email correspondence with them was quick and responsive. I also liked the follow up after returning back to Australia. Good customer service.
