Inclusions, exclusions and other key features to look out for

Once you’re familiar with the policies and their general features, don’t forget to look at the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to understand the fine print of what you’re buying. To give you a better idea, here’s a list of some of the different inclusions and exclusions that you should watch out for. Of course they will vary for the various Webjet policies, and that’s exactly what you need to be aware of.

Cancellation fees and lost deposits

Webjet will pay your cancellation fees for travel and accommodation arrangements that you have paid in advance and cannot recover in any other way if your trip is cancelled due to unexpected circumstances outside your control.

Fine print: Your claim will not be accepted if you were aware of any reason, before your period of cover started, that may cause changes to your travel plans. You will also not be paid if a tour operator is unable to complete arrangements for a tour because there were not enough people to go on the tour.

Overseas medical assistance and expenses

You can claim medical or hospital expenses you incur until you return to Australia if you’ve injured yourself or become sick while travelling. Depending on the policy you’ve purchased, Webjet can also arrange for your medical transfer or evacuation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment overseas or be brought back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision.

Fine print: If according to Allianz Global Assistance, you should go back home for treatment but you continue to stay overseas, then you will be paid the amount which would cover your medical expenses had you agreed to the insurer’s recommendation.

Travel documents and transaction cards

In case you misplace important travel documents such as your passport, transaction cards or travellers’ cheques, then Webjet will pay the issuer's fees for replacement costs of the items lost, stolen or destroyed. You can also claim for any loss resulting from the fraudulent use of the transaction cards or travellers’ cheques.

Fine print: Your claim can be rejected if you don’t report your loss or theft within 24 hours to the police and, in the case of transaction cards and travellers cheques, to the issuing bank or company. Don’t forget to keep a written proof of this report because you will need to provide that when you file a claim.

Luggage and personal effects

Webjet offers travel insurance policies that cover that the repair cost or value of any luggage and personal effects which are stolen or accidentally damaged or are permanently lost during your trip. Based on the policy that you’ve purchased, when calculating the amount payable, the insurer may apply depreciation due to age, wear and tear.

Fine print: Do remember that your belongings will not be covered if they were left unattended in a motor vehicle unless they were left in a concealed storage compartment of a locked vehicle. Similarly, your claim for lost luggage can be rejected if the loss, theft or damage occurs to items left behind in a hotel after you have checked out or things left behind in any aircraft, ship, train, tram, taxi or bus.

Travel delay expenses

When you buy the Comprehensive or Essentials policy with Webjet, you can ask for a reimbursement for the cost of additional meals and accommodation expenses if a delay to your journey (for at least 6 hours) arises from circumstances outside your control. You will be eligible to get paid up to $200 at the end of the initial 6 hour period. After that, you can get up to $200 for each full 24 hour period that the delay continues for.

Fine print: Your claim for travel delay expenses can be declined if the delay is caused as a result of the financial collapse of any transport, tour or accommodation provider, or an act or threat of terrorism.

How to ensure a successful Webjet Travel Insurance claim

Now that you’ve read all about Webjet’s travel insurance policies and their key features, you should also know what all you might need to file a successful claim. After taking the time to carefully select the most suitable travel insurance policy, the last thing you’d want is for your claim to get rejected because you didn’t have the necessary documents! Here are some useful tips to ensure a successful claim with Webjet:

Pre-existing medical conditions.

It’s quite simple really - if you incur any expenses during your trip due to a pre-existing medical condition that is not covered under your policy, you will not be paid for any claims arising from that condition. Having to pay for a medical emergency overseas can be extremely expensive and you really don’t want to be stuck in that situation. That’s why you should be honest about any pre-existing conditions while applying for a travel insurance policy with Webjet so that you know exactly what you’re covered for.

Receipts and photographs.

Are you planning on carrying expensive items with you on the trip? Then make sure you have receipts or photographs of your belongings so you can prove you had those items in case they are lost or stolen. Same goes for any new purchases you make on your trip. Save any invoice or receipt that you could require at the time of filing the claim.

Police reports and medical bills.

In case of a theft you must report it to the local police or other relevant authorities within 24 hours. Webjet will require you to submit a copy of the official report or a written statement to submit with your insurance claim. Similarly, if you face a medical emergency, save the hospital and medicine bills to attach with your claim application.

Prompt application.

Notify the insurer of your claim as soon as possible by calling Allianz Global Assistance on 1300 136 261. The support team will tell you about the documents and other information you need to provide along with your claim, which needs to be filed within 30 days of your return.
