Taking out a 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Best Qantas Frequent Flyer Credit Card, the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card is a stand-out in the world of rewards credit cards with no annual fee and lots of rewards benefits. Earn 0.75 Qantas Points every time you spend $1 on everyday purchases, and 1 additional bonus point for every $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services - that means you could potentially earn up to 1.75 points for every $1 you spend on eligible purchases.
The Qantas American Express Discovery card, from 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Credit Card Provider of the Year American Express, has a high interest rate of 20.74%. But this credit card doesn't have an annual fee and you'll get 44 days interest free, so long as you pay your balance off in full every month. The Qantas American Express Discovery card comes with top Amex benefits like fraud, purchase and refund protection, plus global customer service.
When it comes to earning rewards points, there's no cap on your points earning power and you can earn:
- 0.75 Qantas Point per $1 on regular spends (except on spends with government bodies, where you'll earn just 0.5 points per $1 spent)
- An extra 1 Qantas Point per $1 if you're spending with Qantas in Australia
Just remember, while it's great to earn points, make sure you pay down your card in full month to month, otherwise you'll face that hefty interest rate on your spending.
If you simply want a low maintenance rewards credit card and plan to pay off your balance in full each month, the Qantas American Express Discovery Card would suit you perfectly. The minimum income requirement of $35,000 is not too steep and points are automatically credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, so you don't have to worry about keeping track of rewards points.
With a high interest rate of over 20% this is not a credit card to carry debt on. Be sure to set up those automatic payments or you'll find a $30 late payment fee added to your statement.

How do we calculate these points?
To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:
calculate how many points you'd get each year,
figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,
work out what that's actually worth to you,
take off the annual fee you'd pay.
More details:
Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.
We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.
Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.
In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.
We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.
To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.
Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.
We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

Bad customer service. I wanted to change my credit limit recently as I incorrectly increased it but their policy states you can only increase your limit every 180 days so I have to wait another 180 days to change the limit. If you want to raise a complaint you have to physically post a letter and then the team leader of the customer service department wanted to argue with me that it takes the same amount of time as sending an e-mail.

Be aware of the Qantas promotional offers (eg.100000 points). Amex added $8,000 worth of false charges to my card during the promo period and took so long to remove them that I was forced to book an overseas holiday and spend on another card as the amex one was suspended. Amex took so long to rectify the mistakes then refused to honour the promotion, only asking me to spend more money on the card within 2 weeks as I was $800 short. This was not possible as I had just returned from an overseas holiday so they refused to honour the agreed promotion. Long story short, never got the 100000 points (sorry Qantas) and have had numerous random charges to my card since that were mistakes. Be very Careful with this card and check your statements constantly!

I'm in the process of cancelling this service. Customer service is lacking, and rewards are almost non existent. Disappointed.
