Mozo Review   Virgin Money Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card - Balance Transfer Offer Review

Last updated: 10 March 2020.

What's hot:
  • 0% p.a. interest for 22 months on balance transfers

  • $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher each year

  • Earn 3 additional bonus Velocity Points per $1 spent in the first 3 months

  • 2019 Mozo Experts Choice Award winner

What's not:
  • $39 additional card fee

Mozo snapshot:

The 2019 Mozo Experts Choice Award winning Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card comes with a 0% balance transfer offer for 22 months if you apply by 30 April, 2020. You'll also get a $129 Virgin Australia Gift Card each year and in the first three months, you can earn an addition 3 bonus points for every dollar spent, up to 10,000 points per month.

Key features:

The Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card has an annual fee of $129 and a standard purchase rate of 20.74%. The 0% balance transfer offer for 22 months is one of the longer balance transfer offers currently available so if you are looking to crush debt, this could be the incentive you need.

Even if you are not interested in the balance transfer offer, the Virgin Velocity Flyer Card has some great perks. First of all, you can earn 3 additional bonus Velocity Points for every $1 spent in the first 3 months from the card approval date (up to 10,000 points per month). On top of that, each year you’ll get a $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher, absolutely free. As for what you’ll be able to redeem with your points, 7,800 points will get you a one-way trip from Sydney to Melbourne, 119,600 will get you a return trip from Sydney to London, and 19,500 will get you a $100 gift card.

You’ll be able to earn 0.66 points per dollar spent on Visa, capped at $1,500 per month and put directly into your Velocity Frequent Flyer account. After that, you’ll get 0.5 points for every dollar. Thankfully, points never expire, so you won’t have to worry that all your effort will have been for nought if you don’t redeem them fast enough.

You can also have up to 4 additional card holders, so you and your partner can each work towards gathering those points. Just remember there are up to 55 interest free days to pay off what you owe before the interest rate of 20.74% p.a. kicks in, as long as you pay off the full balance each month. Interest free days also don't apply if you have a balance transfer.

Who it's good for:

The Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card could be a good option if you're looking to wipe away some debt this year, as long as you are diligent about paying down the balance in the period.

It is also a good card for loyal Velocity frequent flyers as you'll be able to boost your account by making everyday purchases and cash in on a $129 Virgin Australia gift card which effectively makes the annual card fee $0.

Any catches?

If you do take up the balance transfer offer, be aware that any remaining debt that isn't paid off within the 22 month period will revert to the 20.99% cash advance rate.

Also, if you do have a balance transfer on this card, the normal 55 day interest free period on new purchases won't apply and you'll start paying interest immediately, so keep your new spending to a minimum and pay it off as quickly as you can.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

Please avoid if you are going for BT and bonus pts

They mentioned in their website "Earn up to 70,000 bonus Velocity Points & 0% p.a. for 18 months on balance transfers (reverts to cash advance rate). No interest-free days apply when you have a balance transfer. Plus, enjoy half the annual fee in your first year, $129 thereafter". But you can't earn bonus points with Balance transfer which we understood only after activating the card. Or they charge interest for the entire balance transfer if you use for balance credit.
